Favorite modern UNIX-like operating system
« on: September 22, 2012, 07:15:58 am »
If the OS is old and discontinued then it need not apply here. I draw the line at stuff LIKE OpenVMS, as it's last stable release was over 2 years ago. I acknowledge the fact that there are still a lot of old computers floating around running shit like Inferno, Plan 9, old versions of SunOS or some other type of VMS or proprietary UNIX but if the OS hasn't had a stable release in over 10 years, do not include it here.

Fedora linux for desktop/development environment, FreeBSD for server use.

Fedora linux for desktop/development environment, FreeBSD for server use.

And yet all 11 votes so far are Linux....
Ill be honest, I've heard LOTS about how OpenBSD or FreeBSD are better than linux, but I have no experience with them so I went Linux lol. Would love to hear more opinions on this tho, good idea OP

I choose Debian Linux for desktop and FreeBSD for server. My vote is for FreeBSD.

As for Debian linux, it pretty-much works out of the box. It is missing support for at least one wireless chip-set that I know of(I think it's a certain Ralink). The upside is that there is a ton of software support for this distro. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy compiling software but I severely dislike lack of support. Using Linux like Gentoo or Arch means you will be installing software like a dinosaur(rawr).

If you want go through the process of setting up FreeBSD for desktop use, you will eventually see the implication that it was designed to be a server operating system. FreeBSD(I can't speak for the other BSDs) seems to have a very clean and simple design. You would be surprised how easy it is to configure and recompile your kernel. Using bash as my default shell instead of sh; I found that it works very well as a server operating system.

Projects like PC-BSD and GhostBSD are pushing the envelope for viability as a desktop OS. I've gone down that route, and if you need ATI/AMD video drivers for BSD; good luck(again, lack of support).

For an average desktop operating system, you need all the bells and whistles out of the box. This means anything Ubuntu(which is based on Debian; including some other useless/useful shit). I can deal with Ubuntu as long as my HDMI audio works ;)

P.S. Professor Potato is a necessary evil. I doubt anybody actually likes HP-UX or any other proprietary UNIX except Solaris/SunOS. Dtrace definitely makes Solaris/SunOS more valuable, although I'm unaware of any similar advancements regarding it's counterparts. I would like to hear what everyone else has to say..

Mac also being Unix based, your argument suggest that Mac is the redheadded stepchild of Linux. Stepchild that also likes cum on it's chin.

Being that as it is, Mac is still part of the family of Kernels we all love here. Apple products wouldn't be so bad, or bashed if they would lower their prices and not market to fags who know nothing about what they are talking about. Example, iPhone 5 costs Apple around $170 to manufacture, and sells for $700 just phone with no contract.

I might use Apple products if they would lower the price or if it was given to me free as a gift.

Well sorry if i came off like a troll just now. But thats True and that is exactly the reason i am bashing them. if they lower there prices to a reasonable price that would crush one of my biggest problems with apple.

Actually no, I would STILL bash apple. I dislike their companies ethics and policies, and I despite the fact that OSx also uses a Kernel that's part of the family....it's like that distant redneck cousin in alabama who married his sister that you don't talk about. And have you peeked under the hood of OSx? The source code for that stuff is horrible!!! Convoluted, messy, disorganized. Though the end result looks pretty....
As for the iphone... SMFH not only is it underperforming compared to the galaxy s3, it's like 3x as expensive! The only thing it has going for it is the smaller screen, which I used to think the s2 had too large of a screen until i started using it and now i think it's just right and apple is too small, and the lighter weight. As for thickness, s3 is a little over 1mm thicker so not a big deal.
Now add in that the s3 has 4x the processing power, is easier to navigate (imo), and the instant sharing capabilites of it (awesome since so many people are getting the s3) I don't see why ANYONE is going so ape shit for the i5. Why do you want to pay $700 for an inferior piece of tech? Guess that's the power of a name brand...
The only apple product I have is an iPod touch that I got as a gift last year. Though I have yet to find a portable music player that rivals the iPod unfortunately. Nothing that suits me anyways :/

KK, that all said. Apple is easy to use as an end user, is very pretty, and OSx performs very similar to linux. However, I do not support them in any way, and never will. Thats just my $0.02

I don't have anything against OS X, in fact it is a very stable and well supported platform. If the price of an apple concerns you, don't buy one. It is hasty to bash a product based on price rather than quality. I don't own any apple machines(my apple 2 doesn't count), but the truth is you get a quality product with a decent warranty.  That's what all those dollar signs are for..

I have OSX on macbook pro, and it runs the same as windows would. They both deteriorate in performance the longer you use them unlike the open source unix derivatives like GNU/Linux :P

Yup ^. I also hate the fact that Ipods are built to die in three years.

No one argue with me because I know it's true.

I think price is one of the most important things to bash OS X on :D I mean, honestly the reason I started using Linux was because it was free.  My parents weren't going to buy me a computer... so I fixed one up and used it like crazy -> then that led into programming -> then that led into evilzone.org  8)

I get into an argument everyday with my friend anthony because he thinks Apple is sooooo much better but the only reason he can think of is, "because it looks GOOD!" which (IMHO) shouldn't be a difference in a $1200 macbook pro or a "broken" pc that you only pay like 50 bucks for, and it really just has malware ;) and what ultimately grinds my gears is when I tell him that it's the hardware that you should be paying for and he says, "90% of the world's population doesn't know what the heck a processing RAM stick of GigaByteTeraElectron quantum...etc..." when really he is going to think OS X is so much better because "it's made for video editing" and he's going to end up with an i3 with 3 gigs of ram while trying to run a fancy GUI + Logic Pro + iMovie or whatever the hell it is...

anyways that's my 2 cents ;) I <3 FOSS

P.S. I think this is going to end up becoming a Linux VS OSX battle  ;D
