« on: October 03, 2012, 07:31:59 pm »
so i have an assiment in school about networking
i havent setted up a network sience win 98 >.< and that was a small 3 computer router network

correct me if iam wrong:
lets say

24computers is wired to a 24p switch like this one
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps10898/data_sheet_c78-610061.html

the switch is connected to the wifi/lan router like this one
http://www.netgear.com/home/products/wirelessrouters/ultimate-performance/WNDR4500.aspx#

and the router is connected to the internet
do i need a special cable between the router and switch or is a cat6 ok?

did i miss anything?

I'm pretty sure that cat5 will be fine.

The only time you need a special cable between network devices is when you are trying to connect two similar devices, i.e. a switch to another switch, or a router to another router. In those cases you need crossover cables. However, small home and office wifi routers, and a lot of high-end networking devices come with a feature called auto-mdix (medium dependent interface crossover) which takes away the need for cross-over cables.

As you and ragehottie have already discussed, a straight-through cat5(e) cable will do just fine.

More on mdix if you're interested (it's pretty cool):
