Seems like you downloaded the preconfigured vmware image. You can just import it to vmware server or workstation or you can convert it to another format like ovf and import it to virtualbox or something like that.

If you want to install it you should download the iso image.

btw. are you sure you got a zip file? sometimes windows shows .iso files as archive and wants to open it with winzip

If you've downloaded the Virtual Machine image, open it in Vmware Workstation or Vmware Player and then just to proceed to run it as a virtual machine on your Windows Desktop.

If you want to do a hard drive install look into a program like PowerISO or similar. Download the ISO image of BT5 R3, then just open the ISO with PowerISO and make yourself  a bootable CD.

Afterwards, restart the machine, boot from the disk, and login to Backtrack. Select the Setup file  on the BT5 Desktop and install it alongside your Windows installation.

You also have the option of installing to a pendrive. Download the BT5 ISO. You'll see it listed under "Image Type" on the BT downloads page. If you have a portable USB get a copy of a program like Unetbootin. Run the program as Admin and specify the drive path. Now just point to the location of the ISO file. Select Backtrack from the drop-down menu and choose your persistence setting. Hit create.

Once this is done, restart the machine and enter your BIOS settings. Be sure to choose "External" as first priority. Save and exit. The machine will now boot off the USB straight into Backtrack.

* If you have problems with Unetbootin on your USB install. Try a different program like Universal USB Installer.

Hope that helps a little  :)
