Gaming for Linux
« on: November 20, 2012, 07:47:27 am »
Essentially, Valve ( the company behind Steam Workshop, Half Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead) are working on bringing Steam to Linux and even debating creating their own *nix OS called a SteamBox which would be an OS based on Steam, which could bring the rein of consoles to an end.

Also linux gaming related:

Only the first part is interesting, TL;DR Nvidia has a new driver specifically to boost linux gaming:

Great post, its time for the Computer Gamer division to come back, I imagine running games off of linux would be much faster then windows, with less processes running and all. Good share, +1

Lol yes actually, one of those links had a report that showed a game playing on windows at 200 FPS then on the exact same machine at 345 FPS. I personally think it would be wicked if gaming could come to linux, due to it playing better the pro gamers would xfer to linux faster and those who want to be good or dream of being pro would follow. In no time at all, a large portion of the gaming world WOULD be playing from *nix boxes. And seeing as how gamers make up a large portion of the computer user world, i should think that porting gaming to *nix is probably the single move that is most likely to make Linux mainstream (or moreso)

But those are specialized boxes, true gaming consoles are adding other features to them like netflix and such, but at the end of the day it's a gaming console not a full fledged computer. Now if linux gaming on the PC becomes viable though, people will start using linux more often. Especially once they realize it's free lol

Yeah Linux will definitely become more popular and maybe even run out consoles eventually. I'm actually surprised that nvidia is still helping out linux after torvalds openly insulted them...

Idk where you guys get your sources, but Xbox is most definitely NOT a linux kernel.

The original Xbox ran an OS that had its roots in Windows 2000. The Xbox 360′s OS, in turn, has its roots in the OS of the original Xbox. I’ve been told (not by Microsoft, but by one of its partners that the Xbox absolutely positively does NOT run Linux or Unix or some variant of that. The Xbox 360 project started with the Xbox OS the same way the Xbox project started with Windows 2000. They cut, added, and changed it in both large and small ways. It’s now quite a bit different from the Xbox OS, which was itself quite a bit different from Windows 2000.

As for playstation 3, again not linux based.

For further information concerning eCos, please refer to the about eCos page. eCos is not related to the Linux operating system.

As for TomTom, I remember hearing it was based on *nix so I gave it a brief check out and it seems legit. http://www.tomtom.com/page.php?Page=gpl

*edit:

Oh man I feel humiliated lol. Thanks Deamon, I for some reason really believed they both ran a linux kernel, I read somewhere about it.
For Xbox it makes sense, why would one of the biggest OS makers run a free OS on their device :P
For PS3 I dunno why they didn't turn to linux.

I will read all the links you gave, thank you!

Personal computing is run on Windows. A LOT of the market is geared towards gamers especially the high-end computers. If they would switch gears and start promoting Linux I really believe the battlefield will be leveled out and end-users would start migrating to Linux based everything. People running Linux have to fuck with Wine, making at most times not worth the effort. If the claims from Valve go through, I see a big influx in Linux usage and people may start opening their eyes. I really hope this goes as planned. Could mean a revolution in computing as we know it. DOWN WITH WINDOWS!!!!
