What do you guys think about using telnet
« on: December 07, 2012, 10:16:08 am »
There is soooo much to work with from the information on this site I really didnt know where to start even after reading the pinned threads. I just thought I would start out with something I am familiar with. It is the only thing I have ever used, I was wondering If thats a good thing to start off with if you are a newbie to all this. All I did with it was retrieve a websites HTML code. I want to try some more challenges and stuff you know just ride the training wheels for  a little before they come off.

does anyone know a good website that has telnet challenges and stuff?

http://smashthestack.org/ comes as close as it can get to "telnet challenges" but I doubt you'll be able to beat any of those at this point :P

Telnet :o Why use telnet, it's old and outdated. Try to look at some more  up to date stuff. Do you have any field in hacking which you found more interesting that anything else.

Telnets still usable for grabbing html code but imo you might as well just right click the web page. I can respect wanting to start with something familiar, but the best thing you can do is something unfamiliar as pushing your boundaries is how you learn. If your into remote connections though I would suggest SSH. Go to overthewire.org and do the bandit missions, it'll teach you some about ssh and a ton about *nix cli commands. Good luck man, and hapoy hacking ;)

You can also use it to grab information about the site...assuming it's very insecure  :P

Go netcat. Chat with your friends and share files.....and other stuff.

If you wanna be a badass, you can IRC via Telnet. I used to do it when I worked at SubWay.

Telnet is not outdated.  You can still use it quite well if you know what you're doing.  Saying telnet is old and outdated is like saying C is outdated when all major operating system kernels are written in C and without C you wouldn't have things like python or other stuff based on C.  Telnet is very usable for things like IRC, checking web pages, and many other things.
I have dreamed a dream, but now that dream has gone from me.  In its place now exists my own reality, a reality which I have created for myself by myself.

I've used telnet to connect to robots I build to issue commands. MUD is also something telnet is great for.
