Bypass torrent block of my university network?
« on: January 16, 2013, 04:08:04 pm »
There is a filtering at university for bittorrent and in fact any attempt to bittorent causes to be banned for a while. I have map the school network with nmap and traceroute to see the route of the packages and the possible candidate serevers causing this filtering. I saw that my packages pass straight on just two machines. One is the router machine of my a little network with addresses and the other machine is the main gateway of the university network that is connected to the out bound net. In addition I run nmap to see the open ports of these machines to see the predict applications running on machines. Here are the list of open ports :

The last gateway to the outbound :
Code: [Select]
PORT    STATE    SERVICE
22/tcp  open     ssh
25/tcp  open     smtp

161/tcp filtered snmp
179/tcp open     bgp
199/tcp filtered smux
445/tcp filtered microsoft-ds
873/tcp open     rsync
No exact OS matches for host (If you know what OS is running on it, see http://nmap.org/submit/ ).

With respect to these information do you think what causes that filtering and how can be bypassed?

Don't know much about seedbox, but VPN sounds great in something like this.

Seedboxes are remote torrent web guis. You can download your torrents to your seedbox and then download via FTP or HTTP. Seedboxes are also great because they run 24/7 as well as have fast internet connections usually going from 10mb/s-1gb/s.

www.google.com
obviously, but that would land me with loads of them. Am I supposed to believe the "reviews" on their site?

or am I to believe their sales pitch?
I wrote "recommend" not "list". Obviously, there is a difference. anyhow.

I'm pretty sure I remember you deleting post like these skidiot.h ;)

You have some extended knowledge of the torrent world why not give some advice. I've used a few seedboxes personally but that was a while ago and don't remember the providers.

I've only used 3 different hosts

santrex.net - complete shit

I don't remember the other 2. I literally just bought one from meggafast.com as it was recommended to me. I'm to fucking poor to afford much lol

Or use a site like streamza, or use your phones network with a torrent client, or as originally said have a friend, parent, whatever setup a SSH connection or VPN outside of the universities network and either use an SSH tunnel or a VPN and tunnel that way. Use something like hotspot shield. However seedboxes are great and I shared the same views as why am I going to pay for something that I get free until I got a DCMA contact from my ISP and they prosecute on university networks if caught. Seedbox purchased with bitcoin or via prepaid CC you protect yourself and high bandwidth use.

@Satan911
I have a small list of seedboxes that I have used/been recommended:

whatbox.ca - great if you download a lot of large torrents, they offer decent speeds with a lot of hard drive space for $25
meggafast.com - I used them for a couple of months but they did away with google checkout. However great support with good speeds
ultraseedbox.com - my current provider, been using them for a month on a 10Gb/s dl and 1Gb/s up, (Storm 10G plan) hosted in NL on leaseweb server I pay $30/mo and am happy with it. I like the openvpn that comes setup with it so it's nice to be behind a VPN when I feel like it, or want to share my torrent account with my dad.

There are lots of options, torrent-invites have a good list with reviews from actual users (some are from promoters) but other people will commit with what plans they've tried, rate on support/services, etc.

YAY!! I revived an old topic xD

I've been using https://www.feralhosting.com for the last month. The smallest plan is really good for the money. Uploaded over 4.5 TB this month for 18$. Their bandwidth meter isn't working.
