virtual Box USB integration
« on: January 29, 2013, 09:34:33 am »
I realy dont know if this question belongs here but its fucked me so hard i couldn't trace elsewhere...

Ive got a laptop running on ubuntu12.04 precise on which i installed an oracle vm via the terminal , everything here worked fine until i headed to the usb part.
i was prompted to install an extension pack of which i did but on adding a usb it couldnt recognise any!

ive googled all over and nothing has worked so far .
anyone with a solution about this? i intend to run Backtrack 5R3 on it of which i have installed successfully.

If you don't go into the tiger's cave, how will you get the cub?

Was the extension pack the "VirtualBOX Guest additions"? What do you mean "by adding USB"? What do you mean by "couldn't recognize any" (does the host or the VM can't recognize your USBs)?

Need more details, man.

the extension pack was Oracle_VM_VirtualBox_Extension_Pack-4.2.6-82870  for usb 2.0
in the vbox settings there is a part where one has to chose a USB to dedicate to the virtual box of which it displays an error: <no devices found>
the host does recognize my USB s without a problem in fact im using one for my wireless connections.

Well I am not sure if this works in Ubuntu 12.04 but when I used to be in older version, this had worked for me. Not sure if it works anymore or not (as I do not use VBox these days).

But maybe you should check this guide:
http://www.techgaun.com/2011/02/how-to-fix-usb-support-in-virtualbox.html

It should be as simple as doing:
sudo useradd -G vboxusers <your_username>

Uhm, well a long time ago when I ran ubuntu this was no problem.
On my current arch install I can also use USB support for guest systems.

You need to load the ISO in the guest OS and install guest additions.
Also youll need the expansion pack which can be downloaded at the website.

If the GUI is not working you can always use the console there is this tool called vboxmanage which lets you do anything the GUI does with more verbosity.

Its not that hard.

also, is your usb port 3.0? usb 3.0 doesn't work for virtual box yet, and i don't know when it will.

really pisses me off as i only have usb 3.0 ports on my laptop, so i have to dual boot to use usb

You could just mount the drive and share folders which will equal in just about the same speed.
