Does windows 8 detect pirated software?
« on: February 07, 2013, 05:31:40 pm »
I still have windows 7 and I'm happy with it, but Microsoft is strongly moving towards windows 8, so strongly they even stopped supporting windows 7 in the new updates for a bunch of frameworks such as Windows Phone sdk, Blend SDK, etc.
So I'm trying to keep in touch and stay updated, but the problem is a bunch of stuff that I didn't really buy from the store (first world problems) and so I'm just wondering if Windows 8 will detect/delete them.
I also changed some core windows files and dlls (programmer's nature), so...

Well when you really think about it, it would be rather hard for it to detect pirated software. Windows products and windows partners, yea, maybe, but games and movies and shows and whatever else, Microsoft would have to keep a database of checksums and update it every time an update comes out for a piece of software on that list. It would be such an investment, and then just to have it all thrown away when one of us comes up with a devious and sinister work around. I imagine they aren't even going to bother, to much money for futile project.

Definitely good information. I haven't used Windows 8 at all yet. How does it compare to Windows 7. And should I stick with Windows 7 for now or go to 8?

Compatibility issues, had to get used to having my documents in a dif spot, not as good-looking...its basically Win7 for tablets, but they wanted to make tablets and PC's closer together. It should have just stuck with being for tablets and upgraded win7. Once you get used to it, there isn't much to complain about, but almost everything I do is run in compatibility mode for 7. Although, one noticeable feature included in 8 is the hardware acceleration feature, it does a great job of keeping your computer moving whenever you would expect some sort of lag.

Thanks for the great information. What do you recommend then Windows 7 or 8? Generally speaking.

Unless you can get Windows 8 for free, go for Windows 7. If they haven't already stopped updating 7, they will soon, and some of the updates released for 8 should have probably been in windows 7. Also, 8 appears to be a bit more open-source, with the more easily accessible command line and powershell. Contrary to what DeepCopy said, its not a bad OS, just different and with some useless flash. It took me all night to think of something I truly didn't like about it, and I came up with only 1 thing: the CRTL+ALT+DEL key combination sometimes takes too long to load, but whenever you really need the task manager from it, it will take FOREVER to load. So if you wanna buy 8, wait until its maybe a year old so that most of the bugs are gone.

People seem to often do this mistake, but it's way faster to access task manager using CTRL+SHIFT+ESC since Vista, I think.

This was also true in windows 7, I used it ALL the time. That shortcut only seems to work half the time now, and when it does it still takes half the time. In my case, however, I use it most when I'm playing full-screen games, where I have most windows shortcuts disabled by default.
