I'm starting to think that Asus laptops suck. A year or so ago I had bought one and within a few weeks I had screen damage. It started as a little dot with some straight green lines coming out of it. The next day it was severely damaged with what seemed like pixel damage from the top of the screen to the bottom. I ended up buying a new laptop because there seemed to be no way to fix the screen cheaply. I always thought it was one of the fatass cats that was sitting on my screen when the laptop was closed. Anyway, I got the same laptop and for a year it's been fine. Until a few days ago a tiny black dot appeared on the screen. I keep my laptop in it's case so I don't think it's cats sitting on it. Just today I noticed some tiny green lines starting to come out of the little black dot. So, I'm thinking it's going to keep growing. I guess screen damage isn't the end of the world but considering this is the only computer I have and will be for awhile, and that this computer is basically what I do with my life, I'm pretty upset. My question is, is there anything I can do about this screen damage? How much would it cost to fix it?
-
You should of bought an Acer laptop. No such fuckery and everything that needs to be replaced is easily accessible and the laptop is easily disassembled.
Don't know about the screen fixing, but if it's a dead pixel, you could try some of those "dead pixel fixing" programs. I don't know if they are any use but you can give it a try anyway...
-
Lol I have excelent experience with asus laptops, in fact I bought another one 2 years ago or something.
Display from the previous one worked for rougly 8 years or so, which for these days is acceptable.
I had a discussion with someone recently about this subject.
We agreed that laptops business or consumer are total crap and built to die.
Couple of years ago they sold top of the line laptops which where designed to last.
I believe those days are over.
When its dead you just buy a new one right... welcome to capitalism.
And acer... nah.:P

this should help, www.m.wikihow.com/Fix-a-Stuck-Pixel-on-an-LCD-Monitor (yes im on a phone)
And Id suggest lenovo if your going to buy a new laptop. They have bareble price considering their product and they last decently long.

"dead pixel fixing" programs.
That's gotta be a joke right? Is this my only solution?
-
I found out that it's a dead pixel, not a stuck pixel. This little dot is black with tiny lines of green coming out of it. The black part is dead pixels. I'm thinking there's not a lot of things I can do to fix that. Is there any way I can fix the hardware?

Already tried it

I don't think there are programs to fix that. My solution would be to buy a display off ebay and replace it yourself, assuming you're comfortable dismantling your laptop (which I know you don't, lucid). I started dismantling laptops with disassembly tuts from the web, maybe you can find one for your computer's model.

Cmon repairing laptops isn't that hard, just be careful and take pictures during every step.

Since I see lots of opinions on laptops here, I'll throw in my 2 cents..
Asus laptops are/can be some of the best laptops. I highly respect them. I would assume that you just happened to get one from the bad batch both times.. Someone mentioned Acer, I HATE Acer with SUCH a burning passion. And Lenovo..well, you could do better, but they aren't terrible. Don't shoot me for this, but I'm kinda partial for Dell. It's very likely that it's just because I've been around them all my life and know everything about them, it makes it easier for me to know how to fix them. Anyways, I'm gonna stop ranting about this and see what people say about my opinions.
ON TOPIC: Usually laptop screens are between $50-200 in US currency. The replacement process is much different for every brand, however usually you can do it yourself at home pretty easily. Just remember to be very careful with the wires, and don't use your bare hands on them.
-
I guess that's what I'll have to do. I can't be having my laptop fall apart on me. I'm too poor to get a new computer just yet.
Hopefully the local computer guy isn't too expensive although I bet he is.
-
@silenthunder: You forgot to mention HP. They suck balls, lots of overheating problems. I also respect ASUS a lot, but I'm disappointed by their Ultrabook models. I've had the chance to open one and I must say, having a ribbon cable on top of the CPU fan is not a very god idea (see image below). Also, they seem to have a lot of troubles with the webcam. Not to mention it is basically a copy of the MacBook Air.
@lucid: As an alternative, you can always use an external monitor.

Well I just looked up a video on how to replace the screen for my particular laptop. It doesn't look too hard, I'm hoping it's not expensive. The only problem for me is going to be that it sounds like the dude is breaking the screen rim when he takes it off and that will make me nervous.

Didn't mention them cuz I didn't feel like it I guess.. But you're right, they suck. The only HP model I like is my friends pavilion laptop with beats audio, looks just like the envoy for some reason, but it's not bad.

You probably will break a plastic clip on the case, but that's to be expected unless you're a god at this kinda thing.

Idk why all y'all hating on Acer totally a legitimate investment on my end. cheap , and plenty of replacements if you need them. as well as they are making some money now and are putting out with some really nice looking machines, i know alot of people probably just say fuck looks but i personally love sexy ass laptops :)
Acer aspire S7: http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/series/aspires7 (http://us.acer.com/ac/en/US/content/series/aspires7)
Edit: Oh and to help with the thread, if you are only using a laptop and have some sort of desk set up i would highly recommend getting a desk monitor. If not i think everyone has already answered it with the replacement idea.

Like someone mentioned, it looks just like a mac.. Sure there's replacement parts everywhere, they're easy to fix, and all that, but don't you think there's a reason the parts are so cheap and easy to come by..?
-
Ugh, this thing gets just a little bigger everytime I turn it on... I'm too broke for this shit.

Well for me the reason i dislike macs isn't because the way they look. I think it puts a good taste into the exterior design of laptops, and ya Acer did start from Walmart shelves but i think they are pointing themselves in a decent direction. I see where the skepticism comes from though why buy something cheap and maybe end up replacing parts all the time kind of idea. It's a laptop though like what was mentioned before, they are just something you go through in a certain amount of years now days. If i had any advice id say stick with a rig build it yourself and order all the parts from newegg, but for a laptop i think its an acceptable aesthetically pleasing choice.

Why not try and start building a rig, you can get the best 'bang for your buck' from sites like newegg or ebay (if you trust people) :)
Edit by admin: Please dont double post.

Oh no, I'm definitely doing that as soon as possible. But, that still sets me back around 1000 bucks and now I really wanna fix my laptop because I would like to have a laptop AND a desktop. Not to mention other expenses... But yes, I am looking into getting the parts to build my own rig.

I guess I can't remain completely adamant about hating them, I did give my (ex) girlfriend an Acer that I had rebuilt and it's lasted since I gave it to her 2 months ago. Maybe you're right about them going in the right direction, but they've still got a ways to go before I start to like them, even though they are cheap.

Sounds just like my dilemma..I have a laptop and a desktop, but my desktop is kinda crap so I put linux on it and as soon as I have time to learn how to use my rubber ducky I'm going to use it mostly for that. The problem I'm having with linux is getting my goddamn wireless card drivers installed. I followed multiple guides but I always get the same error.

I don't know about lucid, but it's mostly money for me.

It's money for me too.

That doenst necessarily mean that its expensive.
I always walk in with my bootable pendrive and do some testing :)
