Read something new today. ;D Windows 10 praised in the linux community! :o The post describes Windows 10 as :
" Finally, A Worthy Rival for Linux "
http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2015/01/windows-10-microsoft-plan-to-win-users-back (http://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2015/01/windows-10-microsoft-plan-to-win-users-back)
Is it really going to be that good after the addition of features like Microsoft’s Continuum and the Cortana Smarts ? I agree that windows 10 is going to be a big upgrade. But would it really be a worthy rival for linux? ??? What do you think guys?
-
No.
-
There's no way it could rival the customization and ability to know literally everything going on of nix. In short, no.
-

Short answer no. Long answer:
That site,"omgubuntu", like name implies makes comparisons between windows 10's potential vs ubuntu. I have few close friends that use linux as main or secondary OS and they all use ubuntu. Their relationship to linux is like trying to get as close as possible Windows feeling OS without Windows. I think many of you know what i mean. One of those friends ones tryed my arch box and asked me where is the app store and when i explained how "apps" are installed he asked why anyone would use this. Ofc. ubuntu has linux power users just like any other distro, but most likely it has more people like my friends than any other distro. So IMO to people like my friends who have noticed enough flaws in previous Windows versions that they have turn into linux users, but hasn't really got hang of what makes linux as great as it is, to those people windows 10 might be worthy choice to linux.
But consdering more active/power linux users, in my opinion that is not even realistic question. But maybe win10 will be the best windows so far. That is very much possible but we'll see.
-
As curt as my first response was, I can't deny the improvements and innovation that Microsoft (says) that they are pushing. As an operating system for 80% (made up statistic) of the population, this iteration of Windows looks great so far; as gray-f0x has already stated, it's the power users that are likely not to be swayed.
-
When this will happen I will wear a thong for men and I will go out for a walk totally naked in the neighborhood shouting and singing this : "We love you Microsoft... We do... We love you Microsoft... We do.... We love you Microsoft.... We doooooo.... Microsoft we love you! "(turum turum).
I will take this as a hilarious joke. If it wasn't one of those jokes, then you and everyone that claims things like this should stop dreaming. Of course I won't get into technical proofs for this, as it would be a absolute time waste.

Windows 10 seems to be an integration of windows 8/8.1 into "classic" Windows (7 and down). For instance bringing in that metro start menu. I'll most likely be using it as a secondary OS. As far as even comparing against my presh'nix, absolutely no competition. Linux superiority will reign forever, it's the ultimate form of hipster.
Another aspect I've been noticing in the Microsoft marketing world is a larger push(or maybe just a consistent one) for Windows gaming with their pseudo-Steam.
Still beats OSX in my humble opinion.
-
Only reason I still dual-boot with a windows system is for Gaming... and i'm going to stick to Win7 64bit for that.
And I think Windiws 10 is grossly overrated :P

It surely is. ;D Windows 10 might be a worthy rival for Ubuntu. But describing it as a worthy rival for "Linux". Hell no. :P

Common misconception is: "Linux=Ubuntu"
Whenever I raise the subject of linux with any non-tech friend, they go, "Oh, ubuntu?"

Yeah. I've been there! And there are even those who believe that Windows is the only operating system in existence! ::)
-
Indeed. Windows is just so common, the words: 'Operating System' have been replaced with the term 'Windows.'

I feel so bad when I hear statements like this one...
Thats why I always try to avoid further operating system talk with the "average" human.

I forgot to add, is it just me, or does windows RAM usage grow a couple of hundred MB's every version? Not to mention the stupid layout. I mean, the old start menu was acceptable, but the one in win 8 is just stupid. And who uses App stores on PC's, anyway?

You must understand that this is all marketed towards stupid muricans mostly.
-
No.
Hit the nail on the head.

I was under the impression that it was =< the amount of RAM from previous versions. I haven't looked that up though. Not that it really matters anyhow, considering your mid-range computer ships with more RAM than your average user is going to ever need.
RE: People who use app stores - again, as was mentioned in posts above, this stuff is marketed towards the vast majority of the population. The majority of the population definitely uses app stores and iTunes. I can attest to this based both off of my experience working in computer sales at Best Buy/Futureshop, as well as from just looking at my immediate family.
Generally, these operating systems aren't geared towards the people who are on this website. For the people who are not on this website, a lot of the features are perfect. Just like OSX, the new Windows is for our grandparents, our parents, and our families that could all care less about 'computers' as a tool to do whatever they want, and really just want a computer to do the things they've been told it can; go on Facebook, watch YouTube/Netflix, check email, and in specialized cases play some (not too graphically demanding) games, do video/photo editing and/or design/digital painting.
We can say what we want about how one OS is terrible and another is superior, but in the end it all comes down to the user. I don't want my grandparents to try learning Arch, I'll just recommend they get a Mac and be done with it.
All that being said, yes, I've always thought the tile menu was a stupid layout too. lol

Why even ask? Grab yourself a VM from microsoft and try it out and see if its any good.

Actually the title was meant to be a sarcastic question. :P But I'm definitely going to try out the technical preview on a VM.
I don't know if Windows 10 is going to be any good. But at least Microsoft has added enough new things for average non-EVZ people to get excited about. lol :D
-
Zenith: you practically summed up the OS argument. In the end, it's the user and what he wants to do, that matters.

And my answer was a literal, no why not do it right now:
