Can you write your own waiver for an event?

Sorry for the random question. Me and my friends are hosting a 5k annnnddd we need a waiver/insurance. And getting a lawyer to write a waiver is like 2-10 grand

a 5k is a 5 kilometer run (3.1 miles). And a waiver is something you sign to wave away your personal rights. Normally it takes away your right to sue the company if something happens to you. And I got an answer from an attorney I talked to.


You can write your own waiver if anyone was wondering. It is just advised to have it looked over by a lawyer to make sure there are no loop holes.

To the original poster: You do not need any Lawyers waiver you just need each person taking part in the even to sign a Waiver, the same as when you go to play Paintball or do any extreme sports events your made to sign a waiver before taking part that basically outlines the basic risk to safety and that the person taking part is aware of these risks and is taking part without expecting any responsibility from the Event  organizers  point of view. (* Depending on regional/country you may still require a permit from the local Council, and to notify emergency services so the event can be policed correctly for example.

Which is paid for, right? I think lawyers are abusively expensive, 2-10 grant for writing something that simple is too much, IMO.

Find the disclaimer used by other events and just edit/modify it to match your event... problem solved for free.

Yup completely ridiculous for a one time event. But it is alot cheaper than being sued for 50k+ to pay for medical bills

check with the city, depending on the place a waiver may not be the only required thing, such as some places force you to still get what amounts to liability insurance for the event that can be quite pricey. but you should be able to search for what all is required in your area.
