I used to train judo for 5 years, back in Poland I won couple tournaments and got couple medals in general, but bronze at international tournament for juniors in Germany was my biggest success though :P Haven't been doing it for couple years now, though it is a great martial art for keeping balance of your body :)

Did a little bit of Wing Chun and also some freestyle mma. Can't do wing chun anymore due to relocation and lack of wing chun teachers or practitioners in my area, and due to ankle and knee injuries I decided not to continue doing freestyle mma or other hard arts.

Still train my cardiovascular system and do low impact bodyweight training just to maintain general fitness, and do carry my Maglite 6D torch if I need to walk through dark areas. At 600 grams and 50cm long metal shock-resistant body this torch truly serves two purposes.

I hope there isn't any other purpose for the 50cm  long metal shock...  ;D

No, for me its two purposes only.
Though I am sure Dr. Morph would manage to find a third use for this big heavy metal torch.

Anyway, back on topic...

If you want self defense then forget martial arts in their traditional form. You wouldn't want to train karate or some style of kung fu for 10 years just to be able to protect yourself. Better go do a year of boxing. You will be much better off in real life situations.
I have seen too many black belts of traditional martial arts get their asses whooped by street kids who never did any martial arts but just tasted lots of actual fights or boxers who actually had some sense of timing and knew how it feels to get hit hard, and how to focus and keep it together after getting hit.

Best way to learn to fight, is to fight, and not kick and punch air over and over. Just saying. Though I do understand that for many, martial arts are not about self defense or fighting. And in that case I would understand it.

I did karate when I was a child for about two years.
Later I did some Kendo.

I don't do anything right now, though.

I agree that it doesn't help at all with selfdefense. Kendo is only for competition and there are many rules that keep you from fighting unfair, but in a real fight I doubt the opponent will act by these rules.
