Busted...
« on: August 13, 2013, 10:09:18 am »
So, a few months ago, I downloaded Hitman Absolution off of Skidrow, as a torrent.

Then, a few weeks later, I get an e-mail telling me that I downloaded illegal content... all that stuff.

I need a way to download things that masks my network address.

(That is free. I know of some things out there that do mask it, but they cost $$$.)

Also, could use some information as to how the actual copyright thingy found that I downloaded it.

Do they simply monitor all known sites where you can download cracks?
Does the game send out a signal whenever it is installed via Internet, and they simply corroborate that with the number of times the game was purchased? (If so, would redownloading it and only playing it completely disconnected from the Internet work??)

Thank you.

You torrented it , the trackers are havily monitored by the auth.
Free nah, at least not at acceptable speeds, not gonna happen.
You could try getting into a private tracker which increases your odds greatly.
I used to be member of demonoid.me before it mysteriously disappeared.
Otherwise youll just have to get on newsgroups or get a paid VPN/proxy.

Thats pretty much how it is.

In the other scenario your are infected with something and your PC is indeed sending out garbage to god knows who.
Dont really think thats very likely but in that case you gonna have to fire up wireshark.

Before I forget, you received an E-mail you said.
How are you so sure its the real thing?
Sounds like a pretty awesome scam to me :)
Would apply to must people.

It was from our cable company, and it wasn't asking for anything. I would understand if it was asking for a bribe or something like that, but it was just saying how they would shut down internet if didn't stop, things like that.

Take a look at the ime or header the e-mail have. Maybe it was a scam.

Nope. Already looked at all of that. Seems to check out. The e-mail is the same address where we get our e-mail from our company.

Of course... Somebody could have hacked the company, only to send us an e-mail telling us that we're doing illegal activities!!

Dont get all twisted over scams lol.
I just wanted to make sure that it shouldnt be outruled at forehand.
Someone I knew got a 1000 euro bill for downloading 1 movie!
Interestingly that also means they tap your traffic, we all know they do but if thats legal is another question.
There is no way they could have known if they didnt tap your traffic before one engaged in illegal activity.
Drag that shit to court and drag the media in , man I would love to do that.
Blowing it up that govs and ISP tap anything and do that against their own law, let them burn.
..... dream on proxx.

e-mails can be spoofed. this includes the header and originating IP address. If you were to get really busted.....the feds would knock at your door and review your computer activities. depending on what they found out you could be prosecuted...or not....my suggestion is not to mess with copyrighted stuff because you are breaking a law and depending on where you live you can be easily traced and caught, then prosecuted, arrested or pay a kind of fee for what you did.

ISP's are allowed to do whatever they want with your data in most cases. Keep in mind that ISP != government (one can speculate, but lets not get off-topic) and as their customer you often agree that they own whatever you send through their pipes. Read their TOS. Nonetheless, active monitoring is rarely the case. Passive on the other hand is a known fact. Just a bunch of signatures the ISP's look for in order to reduce mass downloading of various torrents, often enforced by big cooperations or government.

This is unlikely a scam. There is nothing go gain from this, and still to date, spam is illegal so no big company would risk sending out these if they are lies.

Emails can indeed be spoofed. But spoofing the IP address of a TCP connection is... implausible, nearing on the edge of impossible. Don't get me wrong, you very much CAN spoof TCP packets, but not in such a way that they actually establish a connection with the remote host. Remember that you are not you, and the server will try to communicate with whatever IP you spoof, not you.

@OP: Most modern torrent clients allows data encryption. This will help in most cases. However, to make sure your address is kept safe you could get a VPN/VPS/Server for a few bucks and use that as your end point. As far as free goes, I agree with proxx. That is unless you "somehow" got your hands on a server without paying for it.

Have a look at this site: http://www.lowendbox.com/

They post lots of deals for vps servers. For example, for $10 per YEAR you can get a low end vps with 500gb bandwidth limit (limit per month). Use it as a vpn when torrenting.
They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.

What country is that? Maybe I'll move there for a few weeks, downloading every thing I can get my hands on, and then fly back to the States.  ;)

EDIT:

Oh, and no, I don't mean busted as by the FBI, and that I'm afraid that they will bust down my front door or something. I'm just posting something interesting that happened.

"free" solution minus gas is use public wifi. companys are not going to check video footage for the download of a game...(requires a lot more to track you down then getting info from an ISP) Down side to that is that they can block torrenting(some do) and that it tends to be MUCH slower. You could also wardrive and find a place close to you with an open wifi network. hell if its a block or two away just park your car on the street, connect queue up a bunch of downloads and leave it going over night. (obviously cover valuables etc) also means you either need a spare car battery and inverted to power it while its going(or similar). Other than that as suggested a cheap vps/proxy is the way to go, really the most cost effective and easiest thing to use. the other upside of going the vps/proxy route is you can use it for a LOT of things aside from just torrenting stuff.

A while back I got 300+ emails from my ISP telling me that Viacom knew I was downloading a bunch of south park episodes. Your best bet would be a seedbox or to go somewhere public to download what you want. [You can always use someone else's wifi too.]
