US and British intelligence agencies have successfully cracked much of the online encryption relied upon by hundreds of millions of people to protect the privacy of their personal data, online transactions and emails, according to top-secret documents revealed by former contractor Edward Snowden.

Well, I might not seem paranoid, but why in the living hell people care so much about such crap?

This news is being repeated everywhere and frankly it's sensationalistic.

The mathematics are what foils this thesis. Read this rebuttal by Schneier.

There's plenty of ways to get in: side channels, taking over the certificate authorities, coercing companies into handing over information and/or backdooring their products, exploiting compression and info leakage, etc.

But I highly doubt they've discovered some revolutionary new method to subvert encryption. I can believe they've found some undocumented attack on RC4, but that's as far as I'll give them.

Still, this doesn't mean the situation isn't FUBAR. It is, badly.

@Kulverstukas: You mean to tell me you don't? I feel sorry for you. I honestly do.

the privacy invasion goes far beyond this. that is the problem...dont forget about sattelites and stuff. we are all being monitored. but...what can we do if we let the system take care of us without saying a word?...now we must tolerate or make a great change on the system which wont be easy at all.

about encryptions...what is created by man can be broken by man...so I believe most encryptions can be cracked, not by bruteforcing but by implementation flaws ;)

I dont trust encryptions at all, if you want my honest opinion and they ring the bells to the feds.

if you have nothing to hide... whats the issue..

look im not saying its right and honestly i hate the way we get tracked and traced, but when its needed.. its valuable!

Thing is, the general public would be the first to complain if the GOV's were not doing this and something bad really did happen.

It's a slippery slope, once you let them track your every movement, what's to prevent them from also tracking everywhere you eat, who you fuck, etc.? And then what happens when someone gains access illegally to this database, woops there went all the privacy you had.
I have dreamed a dream, but now that dream has gone from me.  In its place now exists my own reality, a reality which I have created for myself by myself.

I am so sick of seeing that same goddamned argument.

"I have nothing to hide."

Yes, you do. Don't lie. Everyone does. Either that or a time will come when you will have something really pivotal to hide.

What people don't realize is just how this bastion of information will rain down upon them in the future. Rising politicians and social activists will instantly be smeared and destroyed by unearthing an old online post or email they've sent in the past. A foreign corporation that threatens the monopoly or stability of a different native corporation can persuade the NSA to release information that will tarnish the foreign corporation's image and send them to hell.

Finally, the US government is divided enough as it is. The FBI, CIA, NSA, DEA and so on are practically autonomous entities. Yeah, well, things are only going to get worse as agencies try to kill each other with information.

If you live a western lifestyle.. you have no privacy!

honestly do any of you think your so important that the NSA/DOD/MOD/FBI/CIA/DEA are waisting there time monitoring you specificly?

Never said that!

Not at any point have i said its right either!

I agree everybody has there own "secrets"... the difference is, are they worth anything to the these agencies.

Look if your doing something that is a threat to national security or its going cause the loss of assets ("people, buildings, equipment.. trade secrets etc..") then they probably have a solid reason to monitor/track/int you...

If you can't explain it to a 6 year old, you don't understand it yourself.

Please go watch Terms and Conditions May Apply.

If it's not the government, it's the insanely large network of advertising and data mining companies who probably know you better than you do yourself. Some guy managed to request all the info Facebook has on him, per freedom of information, and what they gave him back was hundreds of pages of everything he's been doing. This was after having an account for less than two years and posting once a week.

Also technically campaigns like PRISM and Total Information Awareness prove just the opposite.
