Melted VGA ventilator and how we fixed it
« on: October 15, 2013, 06:25:51 pm »
So today I saw what happens when you render too much porn in full HD. One person was annoyed by the computer being very slow, I took it for repairs and when I opened the case I saw something cool :D
There was a VGA card, but the ventilator had melted from it's place, and it was a very long time ago, because the metal parts were very rusty. So I don't know how, but the VGA card was working for a long time without cooling with just a heatsink NOT designed for passive cooling :D that's some durable shit right there!

We fixed the vga card by putting a new vent on it, which wasn't designed to fit on it :P so we had to drill 3 holes on a heatsink to fit new screws in and resolder the wires to fit on a connector of 3 pins.

Now I only have a picture of how it looks when I first saw it, but tomorrow I'll post a pic of how it looks when we repaired it :P

I have one that had the same problem, I was amazed it still worked. I just replaced with a passive heat sink I had laying around. Close enough.

So here is how the fixed card looks like. I still have absolutely no idea how could have the GPU heat up so much to melt the fan but not burn out...

Looks like original :D

That looks great, and as you said, original. I commend you guys on your soldering capabilities, I haven't really figured it out yet :P And when I get close to soldering something semi-properly, I slip out of nerves and burn my finger :P

Man that is some hardcore shit. Pretty damn impressive that the heatsink cooled it enough for it to run, I had no idea that was even possible (even as an emergency measure).

On rare occasions I suppose. Heatsink would get very hot and slow everything down...

Yeah I would think that it could make the rest of the stuff in the computer tower quite hot.

Yep resistance goes up when temp rises.
