Information gathering project

I would like to build my own collection of tools for a small private information gathering lab.

Depends on what information you want to gather... about people? about executables (for malware and shit)? about images?

Well, I want develop some basic capabilities so I can gather in depth information about a 'subject'.

• Like what type of networking equipment is in use at company xyz. 
• Or who is in IT or R&D teams at company x.
• What communication system is in use at location abc.

From computer sources only search engines and mind mapping come to mind. To me this feels to labor intense. So I wonder about automation by using crawlers and data mining, but know nothing about this matter.
 
What would be the legal, smart and stealth way?

What you want to do is VERY hard if not impossible to create a specific tool for. Most companies doesn't advertise which people they have in their IT department. So I can't see how you will have any chance of gathering that, without social engineering. The other two is just as unrealistic to gather through a tool as the first one. I'm sorry bro, but I would give up on this project if I were you.
