Which Asus Screen Model?
« on: November 05, 2013, 02:35:12 am »
New job means new money, and I finally have enough money to buy myself a new laptop screen. These two dead pixel spots have grown to astronomical sizes(one is the size of a penny and the other is the size of a dime) and I can no longer take it. Last time I ever buy anything from Asus. This is the second Asus laptop that has gotten dead pixels out of nowhere on me. Anyway, I figure with a fresh install of a new operating system, I should also have a fixed up new computer.

So as I searched for an Asus K53E laptop screen replacement online, I find that there seem to be multiple different kinds. Now I'm deathly afraid of buying the wrong one. I thought all I would need to know was the size and the laptop model number....

I proceeded to take apart the laptop screen completely. Because I didn't really know what to look for I just made sure to take note of all numbers and IDs that I thought pertained to the screen model. Once I put the screen back together, and did some searching, I find that the numbers don't help at all.

What I'm hoping is that I'm just confused, and that there isn't actually any special screen model that I need, and that I can just get any Asus K53E screen.

EDIT: I'm leaning toward this one, but I'm paranoid about getting the wrong one.

I've seen many people use this site for their frankenpad projects, haven't seen any complaints yet.

Oh my god. There's 1500 different fucking kinds of K53E..... I have no fucking idea which one to get, nowhere on my computer does it specify what KIND of K53E. Not even once I completely take apart the screen and look around...

EDIT: There's 1500 different kinds of K53E.... however, there is one option that just says K53E. I'm thinking that's the one I'm looking for. Hmm I wonder what the return policy on that website is.

EDIT2: Each of the screens comes with instructions for how to replace them. So far all the one's I've looked at have the same instructions. They also tell me to remove all six screw covers. There's only two on my laptop so obviously none of the K53E laptop screens actually work with my fucking K53E laptop. Go fucking figure..

Looks like the instructions for each model are all the same. Look for the sticker on the bottom of the laptop, if my shittier than shit Acer has it I'd bet yours has one too. If you have any documentation that came with the laptop check those out, assuming you're the first owner. Try comparing the cable and connector of your screen with the pictures on the website, having an additional line or two on the cable of a new screen would really suck. Maybe a screen serial number lookup on datasheetarchive.com could yield some results. Nothing else comes to mind.

Hmm. Well, now that you mention it, every instruction video I've seen has the same screen connector. It's always just one connector. I'm guessing that the screen in the link I posted earlier should work fine. I'll just be sure to get it from a website that has a return policy.

i feel like death warmed over right now i really do, so im not going to search or retype what all to look for, but i wrote a semi guide and posted it for soemone else at some point here on where to look etc for it(i think, who knows could be somewhere else i did it). Hell if you want i could just take apart my crappy acer on webcam and show you live how to do it/what numbers you need from the screen to ensure a proper fit/connection. Though if its talking about 6 screws its probably going to be under the (normally black) border around the screen itself, which you will need to disassemble the power panel/take out the keyboard to get access to the proper connectors and screws. disconnect it all(makes it much easier to work on) removing the normally 2 screws on the hinges to get to JUST the screen/casing around it. remove boarder sometimes have to disconnect/unscrew a wireless antenna or push to side, remove other screws serial number should be on back or sides of the lcd. well its a rough guide at elast :P

Well, I have completely disconnected and removed the screen before. All the serial numbers I found and wrote down haven't been entirely helpful, although maybe I'm just not searching right. I'm thinking that this one is most likely fine though as it says it's for a K53E. Not K53E-TX5G, or anything like that. I guess that's what was tripping me up before. It also says it's the exact OEM model, and it has only one connector(one the left). The picture looks very similar to what the back of my screen looks like and the connector looks pretty much the same.

The real problem here is that I don't know much about hardware, and I'm not sure how many different variants there are, and how many of them look almost identical..

One tip; Take pictures of every fucking thing, including screws , pins, multiple angles, yourself laughing at the camera whilst doing so etc.
Really helps.

Well, i assume your laptop fell out of warranty, otherwise jump of a building. Also compare repair costs at an official asus repair shop to the screen itself. Because you don't always get dead pixel warranty on screens you buy from the internet. Also you can get stuck with the wrong one etc. Maybe have a call to a repair shop?

There's actually a local repair shop a few minutes walking distance away.. I was thinking about him ordering me the exact screen I need, because he would know better how to find it.

I've already placed the order though... actually... So we will just hope it fits. The website does have a return policy so I can always return it.
