Fucked up my Galaxy S3
« on: January 09, 2014, 09:17:12 am »
I was trying to replace my screen, but I accidentally put my box cutter too far underneath and ended up ripping the LCD module from it's position. I think I may have separated a few pins from the digitizer, but I'm not sure.

As it is right now, the phone does power on, and is "technically" functional (volume buttons are functional/I can hear it cycle through menus) but the LCD module no longer works. Do you guys recommend I take it to a local repair shop, or should I purchase more parts online and continue trying to do it myself?

I'd like to continue doing it myself, but I'm not sure how much damage I've actually done to it. No pictures are available at this time.

If you're unsure about what you've done or what's wrong, I would recommend you to take it to a repair shop.

Okay i have done a few S3 repairs myself and this is what i think:

A box cutter? WTF? were you trying to do a digitizer replacement (touch screen) and tried to separate it from the LCD? If you did :
- Never use anything sharpisch metal, i always use guitar-picks-like plastic if my nails can't do it.
- I advise you to never try and replace the digitizer without professional equipment when the digitizer is glued onto the LCD (you will need specialized heating things to get it loose) most other ways will damage your LCD or never get it back in place properly
- When i want to replace my lcd/touchscreen i always buy a module(LCD and digitizer) which is pre-glued.

A few weeks ago i repaired my own S3 which had a micro sized crack underneath the digitizer (barely seeable) who killed the whole display. I ended up buying a second hand S3 who did not charge anymore but still had a good screen.

It will cost you anyway, and a repair shop might even do it for the same prize.

True but the satisfaction of doing it yourself is worth the struggle. The broken phone however....
