Torrenting and Warez Q&A
« on: January 28, 2014, 08:18:57 am »
Ok guys, this is more of a ask a question about anything torrenting or warez related and I will do my best to answer. I'm going to be working on a guide to torrenting and warez and need ideas of what to cover. So ask anything that has to do with torrenting or warez.

----
Introduction:

My name's DeepCopy and I will be guiding you through my jumbled brain to educate the uneducated in the piracy world. Now most of this information can be googled if you know what to look for, however all of my scenarios, all of my definitions came directly from my brain. However, some may sound familiar because a long time ago I myself have done research into the piracy world.

My History (you can skip this if you want, it's kind of a lot)

Ok so how do I know what I know, what kind of experience do I have in the piracy underground? Well I'm by no means a complete expert and never tried to delve into the "Scene" I stay more on top of the surface and through the means of DDL, then later torrenting. Now I don't remember what years what happened, but I do know my progression, and what led to what.

DDL - This is where I got my start in the piracy world at a vBulletin board, ShareODie. This was the first forum I joined and the best at it's time. Since then it became ShareStation and this was when I was in high school, my freshman year if I remember correctly. At the time I was happy I just got the expansion set for StarCraft (BroodWar) and went to gamerzfx.net (blizzard hacks) to get the damnation hack tool to cheat because there was no way these fuckers could annihilate me so quickly. Anyways at the time my dad was using Overnet (later eDonkey 2000) to download movies that were actually labeled Shrek 2 but in reality was porn from Red Light District. Anyways when Counter-Strike 1.6 came out, I spent a lot of time at Skynet, an internet cafe near where I lived. When I went there I was curious as to how we were able to play games when there was no disk in the drive thus leading to No-CD. So my searches expanded. I spent time in the DDL scene uploading and spreading releases via rapidshare. At this point I didn't have much knowledge of scene/p2p/etc. Just that I could get shit for free. I took time off of DDL and went into HTML programming, and then at the time what I thought was "hacking" I landed on Hackers Heaven and was a $up3r 1337 h4ck3r. I downloaded random DOS tools, email spammers, etc. I was such an epic skiddy. But alas at the time being 15ish, but have since learned otherwise (right here on EvilZone, albeit .net at the time. Anyways I got back into downloading and at that time, DDL hosting sites exploded and everything became capped and you have to pay to download. Overnet was dead, kazzaa was gay, BearShare and Limeware were virus ridden and only good for music. I then stumbled upon The Pirate Bay. I like to think most started on The Pirate Bay. After TPB, I got into the semi-private tracker demonoid. Demonoid was great! I got a lot of content out of it and this is the point when I learned about private trackers. So the hunt began. I was trying to get into the more "elite" private trackers that I always heard about, but never seen. The trick was A. Getting lucky, B. Know someone, or C. Open Signups. I was new to the private tracker world and I got lucky with demonoid, it was open signups. From there I heard about TorrentLeech, at the time the elite P2P and Scene tracker. I spent my time getting into that. I had plenty of demonoid invites for trade, so I traded my way into IPT. At the time a new tracker that was meant to rival TorrentLeech. I accepted the trade and became a part of IPT (which is my main tracker I frequent to this day). After that I had invites to IPT, being a new tracker this one guy offered me an elusive SCC (SceneAccess) invite for it. I quickly accepted. Since that point, I became more involved in torrenting and starting with demonoid, I know had IPT and SCC. Two of the largest trackers still running today. I learned about more and more trackers, as well as more of the elite trackers. However, everyone wanted SCC invites, and I didn't have any and the only way to get them was via donation. But oh no, being 16/17 I didn't have a credit card to donate to a site. Again EZ came into play. At the time I was pretty active on EZ and I met a guy that I invited him into IPT and he traded me Apple iTunes logins. One of the logins belonged to an individual that had the same username and password for PayPal. I had my way in. I donated a good 300-400 euros and ended up with about 23 invites to SCC. I quickly started trading invites as everyone wanted SCC, and had other high end trackers. I exploded in the torrent world, getting access to TorrentLeech (TL), GeForce Tracker (GFT), WhatCD, Waffles, and others that I don't remember. Best part was I still had some left over, and I believe Satan911 got one of those ;). Now, I had plenty of trackers and a good knowledge of the torrent world and decided to become an editor for SceneReleases.info. A blog dedicated to letting people know what releases came out from the Scene and later P2P as P2P grew and the scene quieted down. At this point I was still an active member at EZ and was experimenting with shells and trying to hack websites. A little social engineering later and a stab in the back from an old EZ member and I was no longer an editor at SceneReleases. Anyways I started shifting more into P2P, and out of hacking, although still active at EZ until I was banned for a few months, due to a post about UltraSurf that infected -ande- 's computer. Anyways back on topic. In my efforts to get more into the P2P world, I hooked up with STG and IMAGiNE and had a stint with them for the longest. I helped them put together a release blog, then later a tracker which eventually led to their shutdown. Anyways that's a sad portion of my internet life and don't want to get into to much details other than the jealousy of other P2P groups led to IMAGiNE's demise. Anyways, that's the abridged version.

Let's start with Warez. What is warez?

Warez is what they call piracy, who "they" are I have no idea, and frankly I don't care. Warez is a term that tells people, hey this is copyrighted and protected material that I'm sharing with you for free! YAY

Methods of Warez/Piracy

So there are a bunch of ways to get content that usually has a price tag for free. I'm just going to list them, and then explain them the best I can.

DDL - Stands for "Direct Download Links" before, it used to be literally that, you click a link and it downloads to your computer. Now it's extended to filesharing sites that you either pay for or get capped, wait, enter in captia, people making money off you clicking links, etc.
FTP/FXP - This is the way "The Scene" transfers files via "Topsites" FTP is to download, FXP is to transfer from one FTP server to another
IRC/DCHub - Both pretty much obsolete methods of data sharing, although still used. They are both similar in a way, as they are chat rooms, IRC using XDCC to transfer (check the razor network) and then DC Hubs are chatrooms where you share content from a folder on your hard drive to others on the channel and you can download from them.
P2P - This is a large category that covers the following:
Torrents - In my opinion the the best way of downloading. You have a client and use a tracker to download .torrent files which are metadata files that tell your torrent client where to connect to download the content
NZB - I don't know much about NZB as it was never a method I used as it costs money to get newslists to download content. As I said I'm not using Google, but my brain, so if you want to learn more about NZB, google it.
P2P Clients - These are things such as LimeWire, BearShare, eDonkey, Ares, Kazzaa, Morpheous, etc. They work similar to other means by you search, and connect to someone or a group of people sharing to download content.

At the time of writing this, these are the only ones I can think of for methods of downloading pirated content. If you know of more, let me know.

----

Ok so that's the beginning, formatting will be different, and more book and chapter like with pictures, examples, etc.

Let's get some more ideas and what you guys would like to know. Think of this as a reddit AMAA post. I want to know what the general populous would like to know about Warez and the Piracy underground.

Ok. Well, I'll start it then. I'm a member of a couple private trackers, and I've been fine keeping a very good ratio on my own, but I'm still and idiot when it comes to the whole torrenting and warez community honestly(just recently learned/figured out cross-seeding). I'm still not clear on the whole 'scene' thing.

Explain sir.

The scene: http://www.p2presource.com/ftp/guidetoscene.html

Scene release rules: http://scenerules.irc.gs/

The 2nd link shows how scene releases should be labeled and encoded. When a group doesn't respect some rules their release will be nuked.

Thanks Satan911 for the links definitely a good start for information.

@lucid
My definition of scene:
The Scene as refering to warez and torrenting are releases from "scene" groups going back to underground bbs boards. They are various groups follow strict release rules such as Satan911 posted. Various groups from various categories elect a spokesman to represent their group and usually meet in a private irc channel and vote collectively to create their ruleset. They do this to ensure a standard of quality. Now when torrenting, ddl, nzb, etc. The scene releases you see are "scene leaks" as they are meant to stay on their topsites and only traded with other scene groups in a different category as to help them stay secure. How torrents and other souces (nzb, ddl, etc) get these releases are by racers that someone has sent it to a topsite that leaks it to the torrenting world. I'm not sure if you're familiar with ScT (Scene Torrents) that constantly fought SCC (SceneAccess) for the #1 spot to be the best scene only tracker. ScT went down when anti-piracy outfit BRIEN took down a topsite that ScT got their releases from, a scene dumpsite that hosted terabytes of scene releases. Since then there has not been a direct competitor to SCC which also took up the majority of ScT refugees. The diehard scene only group of SCC are labeled "scene whores" because they refuse to acknowledge P2P releases because of the lack of quality control. (Satan911) as seen a lot of this on SCC in the Scene News forum I'm sure ;-)
*note* I'm currently on my phone but when I get on a PC I will add pictures. If you need me to elaborate on something I said here, please let me know.

Kulverstukas:
I'm going to start with the labeling. Again labeling has been outlined by the scene, however p2p has also picked up on this. Labeling works very well so people know what the get. Let's give an example then a breakdown.

Example:
(Movie)
Peterpan.1990.XviD.PROPER.iNTERNAL-SCENEWHoRE

Peterpan - This is the name of the movie/release so people know what they are downloading
1990 - This is the year the movie/release was released in theaters/dvd. However the year tag isnt always used, for example applications use a version instead of a release year unless its like Windows 2000 where the year is in the name of the application
XviD - The encoding of the movie. Different codecs are used, however scene rules stipulate the use of xvid for DVDRip releases
PROPER - This is a release tag used to identify a release that corrects an issue with a previous release. This can be down by the same group or a different group, its all a race
iNTERNAL - This tag is used by scene groups who don't want their release shared with other groups, however they do make their way to the torrent/warez world. However I can guarantee you that there are a lot of iNTERNAL's that never see the light of day outside of their group
SCENEWHoRE - This is an example of a release group. This is the group that gets, encodes, pres, and races the release across affiliating topsites or dumpsites

I will also update this with other examples from other categories as well as update my first post with the topics I put up, however as said I'm on my phone, but I will add the information.

I also forgot to include the DVDRip tag in the release name which just says what the content was ripped off of.

Anyways are there no more questions or ideas to include in my writeup? Of course the writeup will be more in depth and detailed but some more ideas of what to include would be nice..
