Hello, Arch
« on: January 29, 2014, 02:58:39 am »
I finally got off my lazy ass and installed Arch. Now I can say that I am no longer a linux noob, but rather a linux noob +1.

Honestly, I am so happy I got this thing working because running Ubuntu for a year really makes you want to kill someone because of all its driver and unity bullshit. The only little glitch I ran into when installing was when I was testing out keyboard layouts and 'accidentally' set my layout to latin.. Needless to say that was painful.
Next I got my drivers for my Radeon 7670/Integrated Intel Hybrid thing set up, which was the most painful part, but hey, when has installing drivers in *nix not been a bitch? Now that I have everything working though I am in love with the system, everything runs silky smooth and there's no input lag (finally!) when programming my games. Thanks for pushing me to install it, those of you on the IRC that did.

Just wanted to make this little post as a little celebratory thing. If you guys have any suggestions as to what I should put on my system feel free to tell.

Congrats! Welcome to the finer things in life. My very first piece of advice is to not update the system too frequently, doing so tends to raise the chances of something breaking. My second piece of advice is that things will most certainly break, at one point or another.

If you haven't landed on a DE or WM to use(go WM), I'd highly recommend Awesome WM. It's only downside is Lua, but I think I remembering you saying that you love Lua so, there ya go. If you are handy with it you have the potential to have a highly customized, and very sexy interface. I'd also recommend mocp as a music player. It's a console music player that's really easy to use and it makes you look leet! :P

Feel free to ask me questions. Welcome to the club.

I've Gnome for now but am planning to switch. You're right, I do love Lua, it has a soft spot in my heart kind of, so thanks for reminding me of awesome!

I'll try not to update too frequently, that's a good piece of advice :)

My second piece of advice is that things will most certainly break, at one point or another.

I was expecting that. Learning opportunities, right? Right... okay nevermind, opportunities to swear at my computer. Fine. I'll check out mocp too, never heard of it. As I still have Ubuntu installed as well I'm slowly but surely transferring all my necessary data over, but music hasn't made the bridge between mounts yet. Come to think of it I have no clue why..

If I run into any problems I can't solve I'll jump on the IRC. Cya there!

I should mention that I haven't had anything break in quite some time. Well, maybe a few small little things involving updating, but nothing not easily taken care of. Once you get used to the system there's no reason why it should break on you.

Also, Arch has probably the best wiki of any distro out there. Use it.

Have fun!

In relation to this, my current issues are some automated tasks not working correctly. such as my on-login static ip request to my router. (I just want to keep my computer out of the mess of 'IP conflicts' that happen usually after power cuts) that and my current colour scheme keeps messing up, because it just doesn't want to xrdb ~/.Xdefaults

That and my awesome and i3 shortcuts aren't entirely working... might have to screw around with them at some point.

What are you using to to connect to the internet?

That is most likely due to a configuration fuckup.
Could be a driver issue but I render that quite unlikely.

Also if ypu're trying to merge with xrdb, it's better to use Xresources.
