Unban from a physical network
« on: February 10, 2014, 06:07:22 pm »
Hello,

I am trying to solve a problem I've been on these last weeks. I've been banned from a network for no valid reason (rules say that you cannot use torrent or DMCA violations). I used a VPN from the start so there little probability that people know what kind of data flows my way.

I've only been banned because of what they call "high" traffic (25 gigabytes a month, no comment). In the rules of this place, there is absolutely nothing about high traffic stipulations. I think they are just frustrated to not be able to see what kind of data or websites I'm accessing (a lot of people are downloading 300 gigabytes a month without any problem). Also nothing in the rules about the use of a VPN.

My work tool is an ultrabook with a USD to Ethernet adapter that I use to connect to to the network with, obviously, an ethernet cable. I also use Viscosity for the VPN.

Any connection with the ethernet cable shows a "limited connection", with the impossibility to ping anything.

I noticed I can still connect via WiFi to the SAME network (I only used WiFi on this network sporadically, having no use for it when it came to retrieving larger data). When I try to connect to the VPN with the WiFi, everything stops working so I guess the network interface of the VPN has been banned along with my ethernet interface.

I've tried some usual tricks, changing the MAC adresses and whatnot, unfortunately, the networks are not my strong point.

I am using Windows 8.1. My questions would be:

What kind of ban are they using? (I can provide further information if needed)
What can I do to bypass it?

Many thanks to anyone that will come my way to hep me.

The "limited connectivity" is something you would have to explain in more dept.
As far as I understand windowz that means its unable to obtain an IP address.
Are you familliar with wireshark?
You should sit and watch that for a little , could tell you a lot about whats going on, if you know where to look.
Its kinda hard to explain someone how networking works in 3 lines and than start about ACL's etc.

As a matter of fact I downloaded this app for an unrelated thing a few days ago so I will take a look at it. Any clues on what I should be looking for? (really quick pointers, I understand that it's not your role to explain everything in detail)

I'll post more information when I will have it.

Also, when I say the connection is limited, I mean that windows says so: "connection limited". When I open a command prompt and ping any website, I have no reply whatsoever.

Thanks.

I know windows says that, the crap thing about windows is that it says only that.
You should at least come up with  an ipconfig, route print and that kinda jazz.
Need to know the gateway , look around for ARP traffic etc.
There is a whole range of tools an admin can use , gathering information is always the first thing.

As Proxx already pointed out it would be great to see the output of ipconfig /all. Do you have the same Problem on all network jacks or only on one? You have the possibility to try a different one? And again.. as Proxx already said, it seems like you can't get an ip address from the dhcp server. A lot of security meassures that can block you from a network are based on MAC addresses (is it your own laptop and do you needed to install something on the machine before you were able to connect to the network - certificate for example?). As you said you already tried a mac-changer and you still couldn't connect I would say they put your network port in an isolated vlan. This would mean you could access the network on a different switchport. If they do it dynamic and there is nothing added on your machine the rule must be set to a MAC address. Maybe they do have a whitelist for mac addresses (MAC-based 802.1x for example) which means you need to use a MAC address that is allowed??? Can you try to change your mac to the mac of a friend who is still able to access the network? Do you have a local user on your machine or do you use a domain user? Guess it would be the best if you would tell us everything you know about the network. Even when you think it is not relevant :)

Yeah proxx said prett much everything, do you even obtain a local IP from the DHCP server? If not try to assign a static one... Worked for me once!  ;D I'll check back here when there is something more to go on :)
