The cryptocat chat plugin for chrome and FF is very use full.
I know its hard to trust a chat. I know many people using it its encrypted very well.
You can create a room and very easy to enter/ talk in whit a few friends.
Of course nothings safe. Always use tor or vpn or even both to access cryptocat for black hat talk.
Do not trust chats like skype. I can only advice you not to because those are the ones that get you caught.
Its not because you can hide your ip skype is safe skype logs everything and government has access to it.
