IRC - Expired or not yet valid certificate?
« on: July 24, 2014, 05:26:36 pm »
Firstly, this is probably a dumb question, so flame at will.
So I decided to go on IRC for the first time. Loaded up fine, until it said that it had been blocked due to "an expired or not-yet-valid certificate from running". Any way to work around this, or do I just have to mess about with my security settings until it works  :-\

on linux use xchat

on windows use HexChat or something equlivant. No web client.

Even with a desktop client you'll need to use an SSL port and tick some boxes about accepting invalid SSL, specifically for xChat you have to check "Accept invalid certificate" and "Use SSL on all servers of this network".

I'm using web client (Windows, unfortunately). I'll try some of the suggestions and see if anything works out.

Do HexChat with SSL, you'll be on IRC in no time.

That can happen if you haven't set your time/date properly. CMOS battery failures can cause time and date to be reset, in which cases, you'll have this problem on other SSL enabled sites.

Checked it already. Everything is fine regarding the time and date. What's happened is probably a result of something stupid I've done a while back (this computer is dated). Should be fine now, but I'm not bothering to check yet as Kali is now downloaded, and I'm screwing with the terminal  :)

The SSL certificate is self-signed meaning you need to accept invalid certs. Nothing is perfect, therefore a lot of IRC's are self-signed.

I experience this too... Kind of annoying since the client won't save my settings when I accept the "invalid" certificate.

The certs are self-signed so they will be "invalid"
if($statement) { unless(!$statement) { // Very sure } }
