Home made EMP
« on: August 19, 2014, 12:12:11 am »
Hello there, I know this sounds idiotic to say how made EMP, after all electromagnetic pulse have nothing to do with enviroment where is made. ANyyyyway, as I saw, you guys have quite good knowledge of electronics so I have few questions.

1. How does electromagnetic pulse work?
2. Is it possible to produce one with home made device?
3. If so, is it possible to produce some serious damage to devices in house?

I am quite noobish in this field but I would like someone experience to explain me.

A large capacitor, some copper wiring and a switch should do it. Much like explained here: http://www.wikihow.com/Build-an-EMP-Generator

Keep in mind that this is no nuclear emp tho :P Very limited.

PS: Be careful with the capacitor, they hurt a fuckload if you are not careful. And death and stuff.

That's interesting, I never knew you could make one so easy. Yes it's small, but it works. Thanks for that Ande.

If you look on my blog about the coil gun, it will give you better info on setting up the caps. All you would need is a different coil than the gun I posted about.

Also take heed and be vary careful with the capacitors,  if you make a bank of them or use stronger ones, touching each lead with opposite hands could result in your heart exploding. High voltage/current circuits and electronics CAN kill you. Don't be stupid.

Thanks for tips. I am engineering student, and have some basic knowledge of all of that. Just never knew how to make one. =)

Engineering covers a wide range of areas. If you where in EE engineering you would know how to build something like this anyway. Also, there are ways to confine and direct a pulse, but I will leave that for you to figure out.

P.S.S
Analogue devices like switches and mechanical relays will lose power. Look into SSRs or find MOSFETs [check datasheets].

Should it be decided that you wanted explosive but non nuclear emp you could use a little bit of primary explosive as well as a detonator cap. Pretty sure i was told once upon a time that if you make it go boom at just the right time the range is increased... For obvious reasons.

i just wanna throw this out here for those common threads  about creating EMP's

its says to use  copper - the thicker the copper the more  pulse you can generate
however the best conductor  is  silver  and not copper

enjoy :)
