Remote Keyless Entry Idea
« on: August 22, 2014, 12:27:51 am »
After reading a bit on car keyfobs I have a project idea I might have a go at.

I read this old article on HaD, the first comment on it is what if they just jammed the signal and the owner doesn't check to make sure the car is actually locked. Broadcasting strong noise on the 300-400 mhz frequencies could drown out the signal.

LadyAda has designs for something she calls Wave Bubble. The BOM doesn't give prices on the page and I'm too lazy to figure it up myself, I also don't have an oven reflow for all the SMD parts, but still.

Wave Bubble would be cool, but a device just for cars would be cheaper and simpler.

So the idea is to jam the signals emitted by car remotes to lock the car. That is a really cool idea, if you ever make one, I'm gonna buy it :D

However many, probably all, cars beep and blink lights to tell the driver that it has locked itself. One has to be in a hurry or very careless to not even look at the car when they lock it.

You can make a jammer device which you hook up or next to the car which jams the signal and makes the bleeping sound (if it's possible to find out the user has pressed the button) but then again you would have a unlocked car without a key so you also need to hotwire it etc.

If you wanted to steal the car itself... with this gadget it would be enough to just steal whatever people leave in the car :D

I was doing some research on this topic. And some people relayed the passive keyless entry system from the owner who was on another location. They where able to start the car, it works because the car only checks proximity by being able to connect to the key. And it doesn't check how far from the car it actually is.

more info here:

I'm reading this document right now but it would be cool if this attack was possible over the internet 3g/4g or something.

I also thought about the jammer idea, that you place the jammer device next to the car when the owner is away. Then capture the unlock code with another device closeby. But leave the jammer sticking on the car (maybe with gps tracking). By this you might be able to prevent the key and the car going out of sync.* Because the owner has to open the car manually. This might arouse suspisions the other method doesn't.

*I don't know if it also goes out of sync when the car owner opens it manually need some more research there
