VLC should be mplayer/smplayer :P
I strongly prefer deluge over transmission.

Medit is a nice GUI text editor, offers a little more than say leafpad.

I cannot think of anything else for the moment , but it looks clean and is quite similar to what I got running.
Me like minimalistic arch with tiler setup.

I am thinking of reinstalling my arch, i installed this one 2 years ago and had been running strong untill the 3.16 kernel. But i might as well just do it when I get an ssd. Running xfce now which is great.

Thank you for the recommendations, but I'm curious what's your reasoning behind your preferences? Why mplayer over vlc and deluge over tansmission?

Yeah, I like to think of my OS as a sand mandala, a beautiful creation that you should never get so comfortable with that you can't start over and try again. You miss out on alot of learning and new experiences that way and I think you keep your skillset stronger when you gotta fix new shit all the time. I like the challenge of a new/untested system. It's like my nerd version of videogames :P

Mplayer being very minimalist cli driven tool that just draws the video in a windows or plays sound from the cli being really straight forward yet very well featured, guess its just a matter of taste, its my favo though.

Deluge is a server/client based torrent program that can be used with a web interface or a GUI or just from the cli and is very rich in features.
Pretty much same goes for this, I used a bunch and found this to be elegant.
Its on the heavy side though when it comes to resources.
But worth a try.

Thanks for the tip, I'll check em out.
Just curious, which tiling Window Managers have you used so far?

He's going to recommend you AwesomeWM. He might also recommend i3, but I'm not sure. I myself would recommend AwesomeWM and well, but if you want something a bit more familiar(but way less awesome) check out Openbox. Very lightweight, and easy to use.

1) I don't use tilling because I don't need it, so openbox
2) Thunar, because it is what I have been using and don't see a reason to stop
3) Firefox. chromium and others break with my old ass builds, ff is the only on I find decent for old hardware
4) Xchat, because my own plugins I wrote and it works and it's nice
5) Archive management isn't dependent, this option shouldn't be on the list
6) VLC, works great on here and my mobile, vlc for the win
7) Whatever works, depends on the system. I strictly use html5 on the media center so Flash is kinda out the window
8) xterm, used for quite a while, no complaints for what I need it for and I like my config file just the way it is
9) Feh, I use nitrogen for the wallpaper also.
10) gedit for in-depth things. else nano
11) The only device I use ebooks for is my tablet so, UBReader? For format conversions and all I do use Calibre, but it's not a standard install for new systems I do/have.

Systems I use frequently also have:
1) Eclipse OR Netbeans, both nice. Depends on hardware running it
2) Blender
3) FTP server  vsftpd, client gftp
4) Multimedia: devede, cause you know torrent for me ends up as a dvd for family and such
5) Calendar: orange
6)  Games: steam (linux support now bitches), zsnes. gvbam, kega-fusion, epsxe
7) Windows Emulation: wine (duh)

Anything else gets installed as needed or I script/code it myself. Things such as conky, tint2, plugins, blah blah blah.

DWM/i3/Awesome.

I tried Xmonad, the horror lies in the fact that these keybindings are hardcoded in my brain :P
And Awesome is my current WM , point is I suck at LUA which sucks :P

7) Windows Emulation: wine (duh)
Wine is not an emulator haha

Oh I almost forgot. Two cli tools that are an absolute must for me. Tmux, and mocp. Mocp is a Music On Console player. With the particular mocp theme I have, mocp looks so fucking sexy. Plus it's extremely simple to use and it looks uber leet. You can't put music on your iPood with it but, it's great if you want to listen to some music real quick.

Tmux is great because terminal multiplexers are awesome, and Tmux is better then screen. You may not really need it but if you tend to have as many terminals open as I have, then tmux will be very useful for you.

Mocp: http://i.imgur.com/aK8d8PK.jpg

Tmux: http://i.imgur.com/AQTp6bG.png

The two top terminals are tmuxxed in the second pic. You can see how it saves space instead of having to open 5 terminals I just multiplex two of them.

EDIT: Also I'm running AwesomeWM, so now you have some pics of that too.

I've also been thinking about awesome and I've used it in the past but, but I wanted something a little more challenging... (and if xmonad keeps kicking my ass, I may end up settling for awesome.)
Also, I do like openbox (but prefer fluxbox), infact I must admit I use them as start points for configuring and getting to know new unfamiliar WMs.
Good post man, thanks. Tmux is new to me, but definitely looks promising, I'll have to look into that.
MOCP might be fun to play with, but I think I'm going to try the alpha version of spotify for linux for music and use the webplayer if that doesn't work out.
Spotify works great! We just got a update to the newest black version.
