We might be too stupid for an alien civilisation?

Quote
There's a worm in the street, you walk by it. Does the worm know that you think you’re smart? The worm has no concept of your smarts. Because you’re that much smarter than the worm. So the worm has no idea that something smart is walking by it. Which makes me wonder whether we have any concept—if a super species walked by us. Maybe they’re uninterested in us because we’re too stupid for them to even imagine having a conversation. You don’t walk by worms and go “Gee I wonder what the worm is thinking.” This is just not a thought that you have! So one of the best pieces of evidence for why we haven’t been visited by aliens is that they have actually observed us, and concluded there is no intelligent sign of life on earth.

The analogy doesn't really hold. Even if the alien species was a thousand times more advanced than us they'd still be curious. Why? Because a worm doesn't try and talk to us. But we have ducking countless communication signals up there, including multiple that are designed solely to try and communicate with aliens. If a planet full of worms was bombarding my space craft with rf signals of all sorts, id damn well go take a boo. Maybe they have observed us and realized we wouldn't be able to coexist?
Mi think its more like a stray dog on the street, nipping and barking at your legs... Either you pet it or you kick it but i doubt youd ignore it.

Fucking love this guy; "And that so called edge of space jump? If the earth were the size of a globe, he would've jumped 1/16 of an inch off the surface. Can you see that? No you can't, because it's a sixteenth of an inch."

And I agree with HTH. I think they probably would be curious. If worms had means of communication other than natural wormy ways, we'd be much more interested in them.

If an alien civilisation has interstellar travel technology and the best we've done is send a probe barely our of our solar system, then yeah, we really might be too stupid to even be comparable to aliens.
