Rise of the hackers
« on: November 21, 2014, 09:50:16 pm »
I just found this really interesting documentary about hackers and hacking. Produced by PBS Nova and titled "Rise of the hackers", aired Sep 24 2014. I just watched 15 minutes of it and I think it is a must watch for you guys.

Well, as with every hacker documentary, it has flashy screens, false hacker view and the way that narrator says "hackers" every time is really empathetic. However they had a good story on stuxnet, but not all of it.
There was a good line in there tho - people fear most of what they cannot see (or something like that).

Anyway, good documentary, but it just tells people how "devious" hacker can be, and they'll fear us even more... shit, I can't even say I am one out loud, I might get beaten or looked down on. The perspective is flawed!

Security expert is a whole different thing from a hacker.

However they had a good story on stuxnet.
This is the part that got me hooked up, I liked how they presented stuxnet in a simple way. However, there is one part that got me scratching my head, they mentioned in the documentary that stuxnet got out of hand and now infecting computers world wide. Now don't get me wrong, but since stuxnet was originally designed to deliver damage on an industrial scale, hence, the PLC code part where it was designed to target PLC's. Would that make it useless if its infect a typical internet user, like you and me and millions worldwide?

Yes. It's been observed that once Stuxnet gets into the system and cannot find any devices to attack, then it will do nothing. Just gonna sit there and spread further... but if you happen to have uranium enrichment centrifuges in your basement connected to your personal computer and stuxnet finds you - better evacuate your house then :P

I just finished watching it and I can only say that first  3/4 of documentary was good, mostly part with StunxNet. Even though I knew something about it before thanks to amazing youtube video, this guys made it even more simple than it was. It was interesting as well how hackers managed to hack this journalist. Just, amazing how they move step by step to gain all they need. It doesn't matter they are teens, that only proofs how internet is powerful tool to learn. Personally , I would never do anything like that to someone even if I know how to, but yes, I would like to be able to , I don't know, find vulnerabilities. Anyway +1 for share, it was nice.
