Possible to locate a Host from a Network?
« on: December 11, 2014, 10:21:01 am »
hello
Is that possible to locate the position of a USB wifi adapter by providers and authorities ??
I do not mean the router. Suppose you sign with an anonymous usb wifi adapter in a foreign
Acess point. For example you are 200 meters away from the router.
You can locate the exact location?

Well yes very well possible, not hard to pull off either.
Likely.. probably not, if you are worried you should probably not be doing something that draws this amount of attention in the first place.
Apart from the fact that asking this question indicates that you lack basic understanding, which in turn fortifies my other statement.

Triangulation based on signal strength, not too hard actually. Math is op. If you're worried then try to blend in with a lot of other users.

edit: theres a video somewhere of a guy who setup a city wide wifi network of sorts that would sniff the air and track cellphones and laptops movements accurate to about 10m or so. This coming from some bored creep. Cant be bothered to dig up the talk right now, I wanna say it was from the most recent defcon.

I believe the one you're referring to is this?

If not, similar idea.

So yes, as madf0x and proxx already said, it can be done...

@ proxx  its just  a question. whats your problem? I am aware, that im a really noob.
You can just try to help or shut up please.

He did help you, then you asked a question that expressed profound ignorance. Not just newbiness, but a profound wtf are you smoking kind of stupid. Generally the response to such questions is ridicule. I've been nice lately but you went ahead and told a mod to shut up(lol) so I'm not gunna spoon feed you the answer to your question. Do your own homework and tell bubba hi for me when you get locked up!

Maybe I come from a different world , but you know when I was a kid I looked for a book and started reading.
You would be amazed how many questions will vaporize.
We get this shit daily.

1+ Cookie for making me laugh.

As for your question craktur, this has already been answered and let me reitrate. Yes, it certainly can. The thing you need to keep in mind is that the only thing that keeps organisations/governments from investigating further into certain activity is time & money. Do enough damage and you may find yourself up shits creek paddling. As proxx stated read up on some useful information or at least google it for fucks sakes.

boot up kali live usb. And play with airodump-ng something like

airmon-ng start wlan0
airodump-ng wlan0

and walk to your access point, then walk away from it. Look at signal strength and walk forwards and backwards to access point. That should give you a basic understanding. Maybe.
