I have one and as much fun as it is, you can do everything it can do on your laptop for free or maybe 20$ for another wifi adaptor. Unless the small form factor is actually worth the money for you I wouldn't bother.

So the only good thing with it is that it has a powerful signal?

As with any purchase I would start by asking: What do you plan on doing with it? What is your need for it?

Could these needs be easily met otherwise? Is the cost/benefit really worth it to you?

I would have to disagree with you here. A tool is only as limited as your imaginative capacity to use it.

The biggest benefit of the Pineapple (IMO) is being able to dump it somewhere and collect it later (I wouldn't do that with a laptop) It's remote management capability was it's biggest selling point.

I wouldn't dump it somewhere with it costing $200 bucks, $50 sure. Although it sounds like a great device

New pineapples are $100 and when I said dump (I meant leave in a concealed location, like in the ceiling tile of a bathroom)

Also there is this under $30 knock-off, for the DIYers out there:

+1

Now that's a drop and retrieve type of device. Make 3 of them for the price of 1 pineapple and leave them in inconspicuous hidden places and collect data. That's what I'm talking about!

I may be kind of late to the party, but I heard that the Pineapples are grossly insecure.

Yeah, was at the CON while this was going on, good thing I didn't get one (not that I would've had the money for it anyway).

To be honest, its a pretty neat idea. But why buy it, right? I may not be able to do it as fast, but I could take my laptop around and do the same thing.

Just bringing up a crucial point, they're not that secure to buy one anyway.

I like my pineapple because it's just a fun toy. Sure you can do that all on your laptop but with the pineapple you can get a battery pack and stash it somewhere with script that automatically connects to a remote offshore VPS over SSH tunnel for remote administration. Or attach it to a quad copter and fly it over unsuspecting buildings to sniff precious packets.

Not only that, but the firmware is written in PHP, so it's easily customizable. They also have the bar which has all kinds of plugins the community has made. Sure you can do all of this on your own by getting a Raspberry pi and the antennas, plus a camouflage case for stashing -- but for the price and modular firmware it's not a bad deal. It's also REALLY hard to break. Like...damn near un-brickable.

Also, for lulz check this article:

I laughed when I saw that article. Mostly because I'm glad I didn't get one while I was there (I was definitely tempted though).

Hilarious. And incredibly inconspicuous. :D

I have one of the do-it-yourself TPLink WR703N's, never saw a reason to dump a ton of cash into a pineapple. The code is nice, but the hardware is waaaaay overpriced. I could make a little army of these guys and spend a sixth of the cost.
Oh...
