Phone Phreaking

So I realize this is a nearly outdated practice, but is anybody here into Phone Phreaking? And are there any recent discussions on it here?

You should be more specific in your question, as phreaking covers a HUGE range now. Not to mention such a large portion of it is either "dead" for most people or hard to do(i mean where the hell do you even FIND a payphone in the US any more?). If your talking more along the lines of VOIP  phreaking their is occasionally some discussion here about that kind of thing, but really its not talked about much (here). id say your best over all resources for that would be phrack and 2600. As they still relatively regularly have some sort of article on phreaking as that is what they started as. If your looking for more old school stuff, obviously those would also be great places to start. if you just want to start a more general discussion or have a specific question then id say start a thread about it.

Maybe you are just old, but my point stands. I seriously dont know where a payphone even IS in this city, let alone have use for it. I can call Japan for free over VOIP, why would i need a list of router numbers from here to their? Not to mention all that "old" infrastructure has been changed out in most places, meaning MOST of phreaking(old school) is flat dead in any "modern" country. As for say patching your wall phone so it doesnt make the distinction for long distance...the vast majority of plans dont have "long distance" unless you are calling overseas. That said im not saying its not still useful information attack methodology is attack methodology and always worth learning. Not to mention since new systems tend to have code/exceptions written into to make it compatible with older systems their is still tons of reasons to learn old school hacks. Which is why i advised him two good places to go learn more about it. Anyway as stated it covers a huge range, and that range can be larger or smaller depending on who you talk too. By this i mean i would include even something like WEP cracking into "phreaking" but since its technically a blend of multiple things others might put it under a different primary heading. Regardless he should be more specific in his question.

Hey, I probably should have been more specific. I left it really broad to try and incorporate as many good resources as possible. And I realize it is an outdated practice but I just find it fascinating.

thats what im saying, its NOT dead, just that this is arguably the oldest form of hacking. Since phreaking covers all of electronic/wireless signals intercept/decryption etc that means all(or most) of wifi hacking falls directly under phreaking, meaning its very much still alive. Anyway as stated old articles on/in phrack.org and 2600 will go a LONG way as far as attack methodology goes. Id also say you should really be familiar with hardware/electronics as so much of what was done requires soldering and a screwdriver. As far as HAMing it up, i dont really have a good recommendation as its not something ive ever looked extensively into. Though the above does have some stuff on it as well, just not something that ever gripped me so only ever passed lightly through it.
