School project ideas

Do you think a currency converter program would be a good school project(High school). The program will include  features like:
1) A nicely designed GUI with a custom logo.
2) The program will covert from any currency to any currency in the world.
3) Maybe a website to sell the program.(60% of the money made from the sales has to go to a charity foundation as declared by the school but take note that this is only the first 2 months then all money transfers to me .)
4) Will work on any OS

So what do you guys think, is it eligible for a school project.
note: If I fail at this project, I will not obtain the IB certificate and I will be forced to re take the whole entire year.

Well... I suppose or a highschool project it'll do. Try to learn as much as you can doing it, if it's gonna be C++ and cross-platform, then I suppose you considered using something like Qt and whatnot.

The only problem i see with this is that the value of any one currency is constantly changing so you would have to grab the info from somewhere (like google) to keep your program accurate.

Next google already has this feature, just type in euro to US or any other currency and it will display it with input fields to change the value to convert. So the sale of this product would be rather low... and even if people would buy it as i said above you would have to grab the info from somewhere that keeps current info on all the different currency's which if you grab from the wrong person could lead to a lawsuit if you are trying to sell it.

I understand your point and I think your rather right. The project will start after about 1 month or so and I have all the summer to work on it so now I'm just simply brainstorming and discussing the ideas that I have in mind. But if I would make a currency converter program I would most probably be targeting local stores and shops. Shops will definitely buy a program for a decent price to run in it in their cash registers due to the reason that's its going to be cross platform. I do have other ideas that I will end up discussing with you guys so brace yourselves.

way we can brainstorm the actual problem and not just nitpick this one idea.

Yeah, the the biggest issue is obviously that you would need the data updated all the time "as previously mentioned", this could become somewhat a problem, maybe if you could find a database with updated currency's and incorporate it into your program? Maybe this isn't allowed in your project but you could reference it, as being outsourced code from developer "X".

Do you have a limited scope of what you may code? And why did you choose a currency converter in the first place?

I highly doubt it would sell even to local shops, as normal cash registers can operate in multi-currency modes. Also they run embedded windows most likely.

Ya I get your point guys and I have realized that my idea is not the best and will most likely not succeed.
I'm really interested in computer hacking and I have been dedicating my time on learning and reading about it. My main interest is in malware analysis and I have been reading some really good eBooks on the subject.
If you have any ideas related to computer hacking feel free to reply to this thread. I do not want ideas like making a rat or a botnet as I'm interested more in preventing them than making them so please take this in mind when your writing your ideas. All ideas are good ideas so write anything you have in mind and if I like one I will research and try to make it.

Just want to point out, you can't fully understand something if you don't have the ability to understand the inner workings of the subject. Thus meaning it would be good if you knew how to construct malware to be able to prevent it. Not flaming at you, just pointing it out.


If I were you I would develop a database storing information about different students or whatever, and to be able to access this interface you would have to use a web based portal to be able to login. This itself would impress the teacher number 1 and number 2, because of your interest in security you could ouput the flaws such as the risk of an SQL injection.


By doing this you show something you love, and you impress the teacher, scoring good marks...


Method I would use in showing that your personal portal is vulnerable to the attack, Do netsparker, acunetix and nessus scans or whatever programs you choose against the IP of your portal. Construct a very neat report displaying the issue at hand, have a proof of concept and show how your remediation process would go to work. 


Hope this idea would shed some light as I do not know what the scope of the school project is, but this is what I would do with the information you have provided us.

Edit: Sorry I think I made somewhat a mistake in posting this... I reread the thread and you said that the program would be using c++... You would still be able to create something similar I believe, having your program that is constructed in c++ be the application that is linked to the db in some way, maybe being the front end to display information about what the project is about, and if you click on "webpage" it links you to your portal...

I think if you use some creativity here you would be able to construct a bad ass project...

1) If your an art or design major this is no problem, bust as your posting here on a hacking forum, Social Engineer a friend in the filed to do it for you.

2) Very simply math, simpler so if you use Googles API, make money of the big dogs right?

3) Sell a program, that takes no less than a single line of what google, or even microsoft offers for free in search terms alone, not to mention that their vast network doing "your work/math for free in milliseconds", and charge a premium? Good luck. Might bag some old ladies who think AOL is their ISP bro. Market is dropping with them as we speak.

4) You are no where near what devs want in an OS, make your own and see how that fares or GTFO of that realm noob.
