ad-hoc for LAN party?
« on: September 13, 2011, 05:47:21 pm »
Well, in my academy only way to use the Internet is to connect to the school network and enter the password supplied by the staff. But then they seem to block lots of shit like Torrents, Usenet, any kind of gaming over LAN (sniffing traffic is fun on school networks ;) ).

So today we started a launch break little early and I wanted to play something. I started Counter-Strike 1.6 and then other saw me playing and they wanted to join :D
So we tried using the school network and it didn't work so I created an ad-hoc AP on my laptop. It works great without lag, if 1 guy connects. More than 2 causes massive lags and I have everything turned off.

So 4 guys connected to me and we were able to play on LAN for like half and hour until the lag kicked in and I can't understand why!? it's not like I am sharing an Internet like a router... it's just direct connection to computers.

Maybe it does make sense if it works good with 1 and lags for 2, then I guess it needs to share the packets and shit like that...

TL;DR {
how do I make ad-hoc on my laptop be any faster and suggest other solutions for playing on LAN without using the school network as LAN.
Hamachi were already considered.

Wireless card: Broadcom

don't have money for a switch :D maybe in a gypsy market on weekends if I find a working router for 10dkk with cables.
Until then I need a cheaper solution.

Find a way to throttle the connections. There need to be sockets available for each computer to connect, the network gets saturated when everybody's running at once (especially on wifi).
My internet would run like crap if I used it full blast. Once I limited my torrent upload a tiny bit (it's 5kb/s less than my max upload) I could play games with 20-30ms latency.

edit: or maybe you can run each computer on a different port. There's a limit to the number of connections per port, defined by the OS, so you might be able to get around that using different ports. You could change the number of connections with some registry editing but it negatively affects normal programs.
