Dual Booting a Linux OS with Windows 8 already installed

Hey everyone not sure if this has been asked if so sorry. I've been trying to figure out how to dual boot my laptop which has windows 8 with a Linux distro and have had no luck whats so ever. Any tips?

Which OS are you installing alongside Windows? I believe Ubuntu offers disk partitioning during installation but this is not true for every OS. So I recommend you partition your hard drive. And just in case, ensure you have enough storage space on you machine.

For someone totallly new?
Just add a hdd to your box.

kinda hard to tell you without knowing the distro, but partioning can be as simple as choosing right option and pressing next to being a little bit of a headache.. either way if youre a quick learner theres like a shitload of tutorials out there... and if you get stuck somewhere and cant find your answer online, then post a elaborate question and we'll be more than happy to help...

If you want to use easier distros like ubuntu, mint or elementary os you just have to select option "Install alongside windows" and it will do everything for you. For manual setting up as dotszilla said ther is a shitload of tuts for it, just select distro and find the tut for it.

Why not just install it in Virtualbox or Vmware . Would be much easier for you.

Thanks guys sorry I wasn't very specific about what I was going to install it was going to be Ubuntu. I appreciate all the information provided!
