CD/DVD burner problems with new Slack install.
« on: November 03, 2015, 03:02:25 pm »
I've just recently installed Slackware 14.1, and had a problem come up with my CD & DVD burners.  I was burning some iso images of Vector Linux for a friend (I'd burned two CD's of Vector 7.0 SOHO), and was about to burn a copy of Vector 7.1  for him when this came up. I put in the new blank cd, and when I went to k3b to burn it k3b wouldn't recognize the cd. In the main k3b window it showed that I had an empty cd, but when I hit the burn image window it showed please insert an empty medium. I've searched on both duckduckgo & startpage, and haven't found an answer. Here's the output from my terminal while I was trying to resolve this. Any help y'all can provide will be greatly appreciated.

You need to start it with dbus-launch
Like this:
dbus-launch k3b

Be sure you are a member of the burning group iirc this is used by this tool, or just use su.

Thanks, I'll try that. I had already tried running it via sudo but that didn't help. I'll give it a try with Dbus and see what happens. It was strange the way the problem popped up since the burners were working fine and had already burned several disks, and just suddenly quit recognizing the blank media.

Ok, I added the burning group, and added myself to it, and tried running it both as a regular user and as root, and I'm still getting the same error pluse this "Unable to find growisofs executable
K3b uses growisofs to actually write DVDs. Without growisofs you will not be able to write DVDs. Make sure to install at least version 5.10.
Solution: Install the dvd+rw-tools package." when trying to run it from root which makes absolutely no sense since groisofs is right where it's supposed to be in /usr/bin/growisofs. I'm stumped.

BTW, I'm using the version of growisofs that came with Slack 14.1 which is version 7.1, just an afterthought I had when I reread the error message.

From my experience with Slackware, there are cases where updates might break some library references, especially for self-built apps (which k3b isn't, but anyway). Thus, try reinstalling k3b with slackpkg first, and
see what happens. (I am judging by the last error message you mentioned, although that problem manifested itself in different ways for me, but it's still worth trying.)

Apart from that, you might want to check other burning devices / other software etc.

And please don't double-post.

Although I didn't mention it in the first post I've uninstalled and reinstalled k3b several times and it's had no effect on this.  I even tried compiling the latest version from source, but get compiling errors that are beyond my ability to debug. I'm about to the point that I'm going to hose this install, wipe the partition & reformat it, and reinstall again.

I'm new on this forum (I reckon that's obvious), and I didn't realize I'd made a post that constituted what y'all consider a double post. Still not sure exactly what constitutes a double post by y'alls definition, but it was unintentional, and I'll figure it out. I reckon if I don't y'all will let me know.

Are you certain your burner is compatible with  CD-R CD+R DVD -R DVD +R.
Try booting computer from liveusb of another OS to verify its your OS preventing you from burning and not the compatibility of your burner. Maybe try a lens cleaner?

Similar?

Yes, I'm certain that both the cd & dvd burner are compatable with CD-R CD+R DVD -R and DVD +R. I've had the cd burner installed for quite awhile, and the dvd burner has been installed for about a month and a half now. I was using both with my Slack 14.0 install, and in fact burned the install dvd for 14.1 with the dvd burner. The only blank dvds that I have are -R, and that's about all you can find in the stores around here anyway. Just prior to this problem popping up (minutes before) I had burned the two install cds for Vector Linux SOHO 7.0 for a friend, and was going to burn the standard Vector 7.1 for him in case he prefered that instead. It just started this out of the blue. I literally removed cd that I had just burned, put it in a cd sleeve, went to the kitchen got a drink of water and came back and put another blank cd in and the drive wouldn't see it; at least not from the burning window. In the main window of k3b it shows that it has a blank cd in place. In the burning window it says please insert an empty medium and the start, speed and writing app buttons are grayed out.

I haven't had a chance to check the links you provided, but I'm going to as soon as I'm finished eating supper (it's on the stove cooking right now).

Oh, and btw, I've still got Slack 14.0 installed on another partition, and I've verified that both drives work with it. I kept it installed specifically so that I could use k9copy to back up movies with since there is not a SlackBuild for it for 14.1, and it won't compile (or at least I can't get it to compile with 14.1).

Re: CD/DVD burner problems with new Slack install. >>SOLVED<<

I had to back away from this thing for awhile and come back and take another shot at it.  When I got back at it I wasn't having anymore luck at figuring it out than I had before until I noticed something in the terminal output when trying to burn it from the command line that didn't make any sense.  It seems that for some reason (only known to cdrecord I reckon) that cdrecord was seeing the iso image as being bigger than it actually is.  I changed the settings in k3b to allow overburn, and it started working.  Hopefully if someone else runs into this problem this will be of some help to them.  Thanks for all the replies y'all made attempting to help.  Oh, btw, I did make one mistake in a reply to one of y'all; the cd burner only recognizes CD-R, but all I have are -r's so it didn't make any difference as far as this problem went.  Thanks again.

Ok, I see what y'all mean by double posting now; y'all just append to the previous post rather than post a new message.  Question though, will it show up as a new post that way?  On forums I've been on before it wouldn't.  The format of this forum is quite a bit different than others I've been on in the past.

It probably wont. However, if the thread is on fire then that does not become a problem.
