Well, I use Bit-mask for Linux....It is a free VPN but it does get the job done *If you are considering to try it out do not run just VPN thinking you are protected there is some additional things you might need* Even though it is a free VPN has some good feautures such as client-side storage including local data and cloud backups and the encryption takes place on your device so the service provider will never read your stored data

Here are some more feautures

Thwart Network Surveillance

Bitmask VPN is very effective at bypassing most censorship and network surveillance by your ISP or country.

Anonymize your address

Your IP address will also be hidden, keeping your physical location safe from nefarious websites or network eavesdroppers.

Extra Security

We take extra security measures to prevent problems common to other personal VPNs, such as DNS leakage and IPv6 leakage.

But as I stated before you will need to configure some other things to ensure anonymity of some kind- because there is no such thing as full anonymity

Best of luck,
Why do we live, if we live just to die?

I don't really see the point of advicing someone to use google when title clearly states that OP was trying to start discussion instead of asking directly  advice. Google is great for many things, but wouldn't count it as great discussion partner yet. Tho, OP should have answered to his own questions to really start the discussion.

I have used PIA( https://www.privateinternetaccess.com ) for sometime now. Actually I think it was after d4rkcat posted this script related to PIA when I started to use their services. Can't really say why it might be better than some other similiar highly rated services, but atleast I have been happy with it.

I do have my own OpenVPN setup also but it serves totally different purpose than PIA as it doesn't really give anykind of anonymity to me and it's not it purpose in any way as the openvpn server is VPS that points quit directly to me.

I would say it's bit funny to compare VPN  providers services to running own VPN server, cause I would imagine that most time use purposes for those are really different like in my case. Unless  VPN server is some bitcoin bought VPS for example. But if I had that kind of box, i would most likely just use it as private proxy via "ssh -D" and then run stuff that needs go through it with proxychains , instead of setting VPN server. More experienced people in these setups might have something wiser to say.

Of course if you "hang out" lot in open wifis or something and do personal stuff then both own and bought vpn service serves same security purpose. If theres is no anonymity side considered, but privacy in LAN only then I would more likely use own VPN server. But I never really use open wifis, unless I'm the one that intends to be malicious in that network . [emoji14]

I've used a couple different providers and I do have a favorite.

PIA is a good reputable service and easy to set up and use, VPN.ht I no longer trust due to issues with the popcorn time team, other than that, the one I recommend is Privatoria. It can be paid for with bitcoins, asks for no personal identifying information, you get encrypted email account, yourname@privatoria.net , secured chat system, alternate dns that is pretty fast, web proxy, openvpn, and also the ability to tunnel your VPN or web proxy session through TOR, so VPN->TOR to protect yourself further. However with TOR there trends to be ipbans all over the web so I suggest privatoriaVPN->tor->another VPN connection so you have a consistent IP.

I use a combination of a home L2TP_VPN, set up with a *PI and a PIA connection. The Proxy is worth it for torrents, everything else is just cream. Android interface is awesome, and I have a lifetime account for TigerVPN, but they are a bit slower, and I'm still not sure how much I trust them..

Maybe this will help: https://evilzone.org/anonymity/%28review%29-torguard-vpn/msg50262/#msg50262

It's a bit outdated (they have more servers and stuff now) but still generally correct.

I have used quite a few vpn services over the years, however the one I have stuck with the longest is "AirVpn". They use 4096 bit RSA key sizes, perfect forward secrecy via Diffie-Hellman key exchange, as well as re-key every 60 minutes. Random attributes I enjoy from the service are no max speed limits, no logs, usage of any protocol, as well as a plethora of OpenVpn connection options. Lastly, you can pay in btc, use up to 3 devices simultaneously, and the client options are open-source if you don't wish to connect manually.
