But how can you upload data from your device to the internet? Point with your phones flashlight to a receiver?
And what happens if you put your phone into your pocket while downloading something? Or if you work with your computer in the dark sometimes because you're so 1337? Or if you simply are in a different room?

Li-Fi could (and most likely will) be very useful in some special cases, and could maybe replace NFC on phones, but I highly doubt that it will ever be able to replace our everydays Wi-Fi.

But damn, this is still awesome.

You obviously didn't watch the whole video >.< the light can be dimmed to give no visible light, however the electronics can still read it. As far as putting it in your pocket, this goes against the whole security portion. Wherever the light goes is what can get it, which means no high powered antennas Hacking your network that's not under their light

Yes you are also right with that point. But I don't think that an average user would like to pay that price for more security. And, as I already said, this technology could be used in companies where more sensitive data is being transferred and every device has a fixed place. (So you can't hide it in a pocket or something like that anyway...)

I don't think this will replace home Wi-Fi. Maybe it will, but I don't think so... We'll see

Also the applications for public wireless hotspots. Obviously the technology still needs to be refined, but from a company, corporate, and government point of view, this is a pretty amazing and secure not to mention fast way of accessing the net.

Even if we can't see it for certain purposes now, this is a huge step. Wi-fi has served us well, but inventors have been trying for an alternative for a while now. I've seen some great ideas flop and some mildly ok ideas turn into beautiful butterflies of potential. This was incredibly neat! I can't wait to see what it turns to through industry, economy, and development.
