I had nearly same issues in the past.

Firts, install a good iptables rules (arno-iptables-firewall por example) , and VNCserver. Connect with the client and check that Xwindows (i tested in the past with Xclock) are working ok.

After that, remove vnc and check the sshd config for forward from the server X to ssh tunnels, and from the client too.

Stupid question, are you connecting to the vps server from a Linux or OSX? Or I´m assuming you are in windows with X-Windows client...

Edited: this guide maybe helps you: http://userpages.umbc.edu/~dhood2/courses/misc/spring07/tunneling/

You cannot just start an X application inside a shell like that.
What you can do is use SSH X11 forwarding (look it up) and run the desktop on your machine.
Note that X components are required client side.
This has nothing to do with firewalling.

Why would you even want to do this?

i previously tried x11 forwarding through xming  + putty to run application directly on my desktop...but it was so slow...thats why i gave up that... are u familiar with visualizing GUI environment through ultra vnc (Tight VNC) ?

my problem was this..after installing tight vnc on vps, i tried to connect through ultra vnc to the vps server, it connects alright, but i do not have the graphical interface whick was gnome 3 , i was rather connecting to the console? i did not know why that happened though am very convinced in installed gmone environement correctly and strated the gdm alright. So i was thiking starting the serverx and re-trying could solve my problem.. that is why i wanted to start x, then re-connect to the VPS through ultra vnc and see it i would now get my gnome desktop !!

To give u more idea of the problem i was facing. i just included an attached screen shot of the screen that i appear after connecting to vps server through ultra vnc. I am not supposed to get this screen. I am supposed to get my installed gnome Graphical interface rather than what you see on the screen shot... seen attached
