Should I bother trying to get a DevOps job with no degree?
« on: January 15, 2016, 06:40:01 pm »
Well money isn't an issue for me I have an RHCE RHCA and a bunch of other certs and I'm getting a sysops cert from amazon. I garnered an interest in devops after a recent project of mine which involved metasploit automation and custom payloads, puppet, and boss.  Well I already have a solid income however I really can't put much experience job wise as for the nature of such income however what I can supply is configuration management and assorted sys administration, QA, and web app testing scripts . My question is should I try applying for the Job with my scripts and certs? I already make more than most devops engineers however the role itself interests me greatly. From you sys admins and dev ops engineers if I'm a 20 something who apparently has no experience comes in with a bunch of certs and scripts is it possible from a hiring perspective?

First I think you post that in the wrong section ;)
And I think you don't have enough experience, devops is more than configure some linux servers and dev some scripts, is a team working (with dev & sys adm), process making, work with other business unit than IT, etc ... but nothing ventured, nothing gained so yes you can try :).

Yeah I know that but like the main part of the job is like managing big infrastructure with load balancing, config management, and shit like that

Yo Jackal, fellow 20 something year old with no degree here, currently working on getting it. I've found that experience and certs work wonders, but make no guarantees. I've nailed a couple great jobs, but it's all been because the companies have been in dire positions. Theres also been a lot of "dirty work" (they hire you as a network specialist or a programmer, but you also end up running 30 other computer tech tasks at the same time). In not having a degree or several years of experience, you lose a big bargaining chip. So I'd say... possible, but maybe not ideal.

Would it be worth it if I already make good money? I don't really care about the financial aspect of things but were you put into challenging situations that you enjoy?

I have not found the challenges I would like, no. Sadly the dirty work is mostly things people should know how to do on computers anyway. The pay can be pretty good, but at the end of the day if the pay doesn't matter than I'm not sure if you'll find the challenges you want. It's a stupid social trope that people don't always trust people without degrees in their field despite knowledge. That being said, if staying where you are doesn't make you happy, it's worth a shot. See what you can find, don't quit your current job, and if worst comes to worst you don't lose out right off the bat if you can't find anything

The only real job i had that I liked was as a Reverse Engineering intern granted I wasn't paid a crazy amount of money but I liked it because I got to work with some smart people and got to do some crazy shit. Which is really my end game doing work with smart people doing crazy shit I don't work with anyone in my current occupation but I do crazy shit

But the whole idea of groveling to some idiot in HR to hire me just so I can do group and user management all day and waiting like 3 years before I can even touch a serious configuration file doesn't float my boat.

I left school with pretty average grades, by the time i hit college (college not uni) they really couldn't teach my much to do with IT, so i left, started my own business at 18.

Several years later, with no formal qualifications, i now work as a architect / devops engineer, earning 50k+ a year.

Qualifications will help you get places, but good understanding, experience and a silver tongue will take you further.

Good luck to you.
