Jackal : you are really a constructive guy ... :(
b00ms1ang : First I think they must learn pratical network/systems & dev things, like wireshark :)
After, like others said, learn them reco/enumeration/scanning and when they understand perfectly what they see learn them how to find vulnerabilities and exploit them.
You have many topics on this forum for this kind of question ;)

After you want to know what I do, and what techniques I use ... in fact it depends on what I'm faced so reco/enum !!! :)
"Which came first, the bug or the exploit ?"

If someone wants to learn, I will work hard to teach them. I don't care if they're a code kiddie right now. We're a smaller school, and I dont expect world champions right off the bat. We will work together, and the best of us will go to tournaments. People who aren't serious will drop out on their own to avoid embarrassing themselves. I'm looking for a means to teach, and progress. It'll be alright

Trust me man, I know that for sure. I've been running in the real world for a couple years now

Oh really ? - Please, do tell my about your running's in the real world.

I am sorry but  really I don't consider anyone who doesn't know assembly a talented hacker

Probably the stupidest thing i've read in a LONG time, and i'm not even going to justify it with the reasons why.

I really think all hackers/pentesters should follow the 4 step cycle. Recon, Scanning, Exploitation, then Maintaining Access
