Desktop or Laptops?
« on: January 03, 2012, 12:55:32 am »
What do you guys use? I've always heard people only use laptops, that is if they don't want to get busted, however I use both my laptop and my desktop. Nothing too risky so I don't have to worry but as I get better should I exclusively use my laptop? If so, I will re-install Ubuntu on it, because Cygwin annoys me. However, I have a netbook(HP) and the wireless card is incompatible with network stumbler. Does this mean it'll be incompatible with airsnort/aircrack and all that?

P.S: Could someone tell me how to find a list of available wifis on ubuntu 11.10? On Windows there's simply the icon in the taskbar, you click choose network-- pretty self-explanatory-- but in ubuntu I can't find anything like that and when I go to network manager is asks for specific IP, etc, as in starting a new wireless connection or accessing your home one, not wardriving.

Welcome. Sit on the couch in the corner and I'll bring in the bitches.

Mostly use my desktop. Only thing I use my laptop for is school shit and other portable-related tasks. Like vacation and so forth. Possibly because I only got two shitty laptops for every-day-use tho.

Also, if you need a laptop to "not get busted" you must be a retard stupid.

Staying anonymous depends on many things. It does not matter whether you use laptop or desktop, but it matters on which software (OS, applications, etc.) you do use.
For example, if you're trying to get into website trough the http protocol, you should note that your browser automatically sends the so called User Agent containing (not much) information about the user, the web server (usually) logs your requests, your IP address, etc. So using laptop wouldn't help you if you just hit it with your home IP and expect to be undetected.. Well, I'm not going to write whole article about anonymity, or which software you should use to stay anonymous. You should got my point by now.
Aircrack has a list of supported cards. Just google it, or check their site.. I'm sure I've saw
it somewhere.

If you have the compatible driver installed, (and I presume you use GNOME by default) run nm-applet.. It'll create an icon on your task bar, and the connecting process should be similar to the one on Windows.

Sorry guys didn't mean to come off as someone who hasn't done any research on his own. I guess the broader question would be, do most of you guys use desktops with SOCKS proxies/VPNs whatever or wardrive with a laptop. I've seen "never hack from home" as an ostensibly accepted maxim in the Security community.

Thanks NeX for the nm-applet suggestion I hadn't come across it +1.

Sorry if it was a stupid question Ande

I use a laptop because I don't have a desktop :D
I am studying abroad so I don't think I would need a desktop when a laptop is fine for me.

The obvious advantage of laptops in terms of anonymity is that you can connect to public/private wifi routers far away from your house, and hack through their connections (changing mac address at the end of course).

weak? no. Laptops can be as powerful as Desktops.
Good example is Alienware.

but it would cost you a little more than a desktop's price with the same specs, right?

I am sorry to tell you mate, but the Mac's ain't really that expensive. That is, compared to computers that got the same specs.

you sure bro?,  alienware fails most of the time because they stuffed everything into a little box and sell it according to the specs not to the actual performance. a few friends of mine own them, and they fail allot more than average laptops.
