Are you using a build in wifi adapter ?  like a laptop?   ,
A virtual box can't access specific modes of those build in cards.  you can only use a usb wifi adapter when using a VM

the internal wifi has to be ON.
I had the same problem. Sometimes RFKILL does the trick
to turn it on.
ndiswrapper to install Windows wifi drivers (if any)

If i am right a virtual box cannot acces the pci buss so you do not have the needed control over the build-in wifi adapter for sniffing.
I did research before, you will have to buy a (compatible for aircap) usb wifi adapter.

Virtualbox can be used with bridged networking and then (as far as I know it)
you can use it.
but i'm not sure. never tested wifi

No, you cannot use wifi card from a VM, even in Bridged mode. In a system running on VM only 1 card will be visible from many that you may have and all of them will be detected as ethernet ones.

Even if you make the internal wireless card detected by Backtrack, you won't be able to perform wireless cracking. Since they are not capable of injecting packets so fast.

It has been metioned before, but I'll reiterate - you need a wireless apadter to get wifi on BT5 running in a VM.

If you want to install wifi drivers for an onboard laptop card take a look at this page, it worked for me when I had the same problem http://www.backtrack-linux.org/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Drivers
