Jarvis is Sick
« on: April 15, 2012, 01:37:26 am »
I have a 500GB Seagate hard drive named Jarvis (yep my hard drive has a name). I've been using it(him?!) for 'bout two years now. All of sudden he became sick; anytime I open my hardrive (i use wimdows) it starts loading... and then it tells me that windows explorer has stopped responding. This is largely fustrating because that's where my backup files are also my movies :D . Please I need help ASAP. Oh and it's NTFS. Thanks in advance.

Seems like Jarvis decided he won't be anyones bitch anymore and quit :D
But really, true solution would be:
Boot up live CD of any sort (Hiren's boot CD recommended);
Make backups of everything you want saved somewhere;
Reinstall windows;

Likely it's not a windows problem tho. When in the live CD with Hiren's check for bad sectors - there is an app in there to do that. If you get at least 1 red block, keep in mind that your HDD has started to fail and may crash into pieces some day.

Also try to browse the HDD from that liveCD (because it's Mini windows and all) and see if that does something like your normal OS does. If so, you can be pretty sure your HDD is failing. Check bad sectors anyway just to be sure.
Might be some other problems that can't be diagnosed like that... Listen to the sounds your HDD makes. If there's some clicking then you must make backups right now and ditch Jarvis.

Report everything here for further help :)

I know that if you restart windows and something may be potentially wrong with your harddrive, than a service runs to scan your hdd and correct any problems.
Try restarting, maybe...(I cant remember its name >.<)... will be able to fix your problem.
I think it may be called chkdisk or something, no matter, it's supposed to start automatically.
Good Luck

Yes, it's called CHKDSK, a windows utility to correct problems caused by windows (that's what it actually is...). You can start it yourself, because CHKDSK doesn't always run itself, only when it detects that your data is going to shit.
