Is it worth...?
« on: May 09, 2012, 08:19:19 pm »
Is it worth to exchange HTC Wildfire which is
  • Rooted
  • With Clockworkmod
  • With Cyanogenmod7
To Nokia N900? I am not sure about that phone but PWNPHONE looks tempting. I heard that the battery only holds for a day, tho you can install any system on it. Quick Google search shown that it's kinda possible to install Android on it.

I just love Android and I love Wildfire, would be hard to get rid of it, because Android has some cool tools for "hacking" tho capabilities are limited.

Both has advantages that are better than the other, like N900 has less ram than wildfire, but has a bit better CPU+GPU, wildfire doesn't have a GPU. Wildfire support SDCARD up to 32gb whereas N900 only up to 16gb. N900 has an FM transmitter? and a much better camera, bigger screen and a hardware keyboard - I friggin' hate software keyboard.

But what I really want N900 for is that I heard quite a lot about it that it can be overclocked, any system can be installed, only phone that has packet injection?

Help me decide.

I hate Nokia over everything when it comes to phones, simply because they suck. Symbian = asscrap. So if you ask me, absolutely NO.

Yeah I noticed that Nokia's touchscreens are very lame and control is very stiff. While in Android controls are pleasant, easy to use and understand.
N900 has MAEMO, not Symbian. Symbian was fine at the time when the first smart-phones got out. Now it just sucks.

After reading a bit, it kinda seems that there aren't much "hacks" for N900, android port is very unstable, dunno anything about maemo though.

I have a Nokia N900. An year ago the Maemo got putted aside by Nokia or what ever. There isn't much community for it now so I don't think using that phone now a days is worth it. I never tried doing much interesting things with it because it was also a big big pain in the ass to get that SDK, or what ever, to work. It's like the whole platform was bugged beyond believe.

So what I say is that it ain't really worth it unless you do have a big patience to work with it.

I will prefer the N900 as phones of nokia are really durable
also symbian is one of the oldest mobile os and has lot of apps
there is an app for everything and that also free if you know the right place to download
i got a cheap nokia phone but it is better than other company phones whose price is almost twice mine just because of software

I rooted, but never put any mod on it.

Really, with sl4a for scripting and android sdk, you can do pretty much everything. Android is built specifically for mobile devices. I will agree with Mr. Potato and stick with Android OS.

N900 is Resistive screen ( If I remember, correct me if I'm wrong)... simply put, resistive screens were good for 2007,8 or 9.. no way should you exchange HTC wildfire with something like that.

once you have used capacitive touch screen you will never like resistive one. Other than that both phones provide all basic functions but android is very well integrated with gmail, facebook and all and provides sync with almost any website. The applications are numerous and varied, same cannot be said for nokia.
My previous phone, an N82 sucks when compared to my android.
The keyboard design of almost all nokia touch-qwerty hybrid has faults, according to the dealer here.

but the most important thing is that if you wish to tinker with your phone then android is the best and if you wish to learn android app dev. then you would need the phone.. I know there is an emulator but still...

android on any nokia phone is possible but sometimes features like camera or wifi do not work properly... you can search whether everything works..

I would say that you keep the android phone..

P.S:- I had to research about 2 weeks on phones to select one... there are so many these days lol...

I know this topic hasn't been posted in for quite a while. Besides that you've most likely upgraded your device already. But I figure I will post this if anyone happens to read this thread and is in the same predicament.

I've owned both devices. Both the Wildfire and the Nokia N900. I found the Wildfire was much too laggy for my purposes even on Cyanogen Mod. I also found the smaller screen to be a bit tedious at times.

In terms of the Nokia N900. I am not a big fan of Symbian, I prefer the Android O.S rooted off stock firmware. But what I loved most about the N900, was the functionality of the phone, and the various mods and alterations that this handset is capable of. Another thing to note with the N900 is the users ability to install Android as a dual boot when the device is powered on. The Maemo O.S. on this device is a Linux software which I find is an added convenience with this model as of opposed to running Symbian.

If anyone is considering swapping to this device look up the "Nitdroid Project" their project support forums can be found here http://forum.nitdroid.com/index.php

The phone also has a custom modded version of Cyanogen that can be installed as well. The only thing I didn't like about the N900 specifically, was the resistive screen.

But it truly is a great phone with decent capacity onboard internal SD, expandable up to 32 GB and a variety of tweaks and mods that can be performed to the handset, as well as ongoing project mods and flashes.

I think a user looking for a more 'raw PC-based' smartphone experience, would benefit from the N900. Someone looking for a more 'tailored and current' data device would benefit more so from Android. :)

Hope this helped  :)

Thank you so much for the opinion. I'm still with the same setup as I was writing this topic. And I still kinda want that N900 :D maybe I'll get it as another device. I really want to try out the hand-held computer like phone :)
Sadly they stopped selling those phones here at the shops. Phone service providers are not selling them either.

No problem, anytime  :)  Try taking a look at online seller websites/classifieds like Craigslist or E-bay. It's going to be hard to find this phone in any sort of respectable condition in a retail setting, as it's been long since discontinued. You may be able to have some luck in smaller independent electronic/tech boutique or repair shops, that deal with the sale of unlocked devices. But searching online you should be able to locate a handset in working order and decent shape without too much hassle.

I't a great PC-like device even to use as a backup phone for your higher end hardware.

Best of luck  :)
