Installing Slackware
« on: June 23, 2012, 06:20:52 am »
I'm going to install Slackware on my computer, does anybody else use Slackware, if you do please post below and tell me if I should stay with Lubuntu or Slackware (I'm able to install slackware I just use lubuntu because I needed a quick fix for my computer recently)

Also, I've read on that der-dArned InterWeb that its the most UNIX like OS that is still maintained and currently developed.  I think it would be interesting to use

Slackware repos aren't updated as Ubuntu ones, thats for sure.. If you planning on learning linux (compiling, updating software from source), etc, you should probably try slackware :)

sorry I didn't post it in the OS board... duh. but, instead of Slackware, I've installed Arch on a virtualbox and I'm building LFS on another partition... LFS gives you a list to wget... things like 10 miles long! but this is just a little project so I can mess around with linux, I said forget slackware and I'm sticking with Mint 11 lol

Mint is extremely good to beginners, I went between Ubuntu and Mint (which is Ubuntu/Debian based) on le newb term. But I was going to suggest Arch if you reslly wanted to know the ins-and-outs. LFS is a touch daunting, and can see it going wrong in more ways than one with compiling alone. Stick with Arch and you will be doing okay. Lucid is running Arch, and could help you out if need be. IDK about others here running Arch, but you will find help on these boards. I will be moving to Embedded Arch here soon when le monies get here.

I am aware of a handful of people running Arch on this forum. I am always willing to help out. There is also the Arch wiki and the Arch forums....be warned Arch forum is much like this one except with less of a sense of humor. They don't appreciate dumb or unresearched questions and will usually tell you to RTFM.

As far as I know LFS is quite daunting as techb said. You have to compile the compiler :P. If you want a nix challenge I would suggest your idea of Slackware.....or of course Arch linux. It's the best IMHO.

I've actually used Arch before (but lately when I install arch, it doesn't want to cooperate) along with KDE and I loved it, but I like Gnome2 and Linux Mint in general.  I'm installing LFS in a vbox so I don't totally screw up my own system but I'll definitly keep you in mind (LuciD) when I have an unsolvable problem with Arch lol.  I have seen how snappy the people in Arch Forums are but most of the time for good reason... some noob says "Hey guyz I'm zuper Haxor 1337 and how do you install Arch"... there is good reason to troll because of that.

This is true. Don't get me wrong I'm not saying I'm a pro with Arch. I'm still new to it. I just had Xires help me out on IRC with a problem that is.....not advanced. However, I will always help when I can. Good luck with LFS. Be sure to tell the community about your experiences. I'm not sure many people here have ever done LFS.

I could be wrong.
