Can't boot from USB
« on: July 13, 2012, 06:47:20 pm »
I bought a new USB stick a few days ago,and installed BT5 on it,but it doesn't work!

I've no idea why, that's why I'm asking you...

Information:

USB:                     Winten 64GB Datastick USB 3.0
Files on USB:        BT5, after 2nd try Cygwin (not in root directory)

History:
  • Booted BT live from other USB. Used it to install BT on this one (using the link on the Desktop)
  • BT didn't work (Unknown Filesystem) . Formatted it to NTFS with Windows buildin tool. Installed BT with unetbootin.
  • BT didn't work (skipped) . Formatted it to FAT32 with "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool". Installed BT with unetbootin.
  • BT didn't work (skipped) . Deleted BT from USB,copied working BT from other USB. Didn't work (skipped).
Before all this I changed the boot priority to the Winsten USB stick.
Except the first time,it always just skipped my USB,and booted Windows from my laptop-hdd.

The USB was always the first in the boot priority,so that's not the problem.
Anyone any idea why my USB is always skipped when booting?

Edit:
The USB is shown as "Winsten USB64GB           EM01" (as far as I remember) in the boot menu,if this helps...

What did you mean by "didn't work"? Did it give any errors of some sort? did your computer explode?
Installing with unetbootin it will always work. Try another USB port.  Could be that your computer does not support such enormous thumb drive in BIOS mode, but I might be wrong.

Errors:
BT installed with the BT live installer:   Unknown Filesystem
BT installed with unetbootin:                No Error. Skipping USB,booted from laptop-hdd

Computer did not explode (yet) :P

The USB Port works, used it alot with my other USB and Ubuntu...

Don't know if BIOS supports 64GB drives, but I guess it does... Why shouldn't it?

Your problem is very obscure and I never experienced or read about it. Sorry.
If you have a chance, try the same with another flash drive. If that works then it is not the computer that is broken.
Btw what kind of computer is it? old or somewhat new?

not that old (a few years),but the hardware is bullshit...

But I guess the software is more important when it comes to booting..

The Computer isn't broken,as I said,my 4GB USB with the same BT installation works on the same USB Port,so the problem is either the USB (not bootable from) or the BIOS (can't boot from 64GB USBs)

I'm going to test it as soon as possible on a newer/better computer.
(mine one is the worst one at my home -,-' )

Yeah, I guess there's nothing else for us to speculate, just try and write here how it goes.
I still dare to think that it might be because your flash drive is too big.

USB capacity is irrelevant, check if you can transfer data from and to the USB before trying to boot BT. The name of the company is new for me and I couldn't find any information about it, Probably you bought a poor quality USB stick.

Is your port (or even BIOS) USB 3.0 compatible? 3.0 is not very well supported especial on older systems. An yes, a few years is obsolete.

As far as I know my computer has 2.0 Ports, and I guess the BIOS doesnt support 3.0, as it's already a few years old. But I my USB also supports 2.0 and 1.1, so shouldn't it work then?

Yes, try an USB stick that is in the oldest, 2.0, but I doubt you'll find something 16GB in that range. 8GB "should" be the most you need. High capacity things are still a bit new, and support can be scarce.

Yes, a HD USB device you add more than enough capacity . But if your after the portability of a USB, 8GB should be more than plenty for anything including BT. Hell, 4GB would be okay.
