in some species, the parents eat their offsprings.. how coherent is this behaviour?   :o 

"Eating your offspring may sound unthinkable, but animals from fish to birds are known to do it." surely, if this kind of behaviour evolved, it must have some benefits..

yes.. say there were 5 in a litter and the mother cannot get food then the weakest is eaten to ensure the survival of the rest...  also if there is no survival for the mother and hence no survival of the child then the mother makes the choice.
