A hacker is pissed off with me; I need help.
« on: August 26, 2012, 11:53:32 pm »
Hi I'm new to this forum, and I'm interested in white hat hacking.

I managed to piss off a guy online by banning him from a chat room, for foul mouthing me.

Now he's vindictive, and wants to hack me.

The first thing I did was do a system scan, and restart my modem to request a new IP.

One of the people from the chat room told me that he had already established a connection with my modem, and that even if I changed my IP, he would be able to hack in.

Needless to say, I now browse most sites using TOR, or CyberGhost VPN.

My question is, how would I be able to check if he had established such a connection with my modem?

How would I prevent this in the future? And how do I stop him?

Thank you very much.  :D

First of all, relax. You have nothing much to worry about.

If someone was badmouthing you and after getting banned threatens to "hack" you then judging from his actions and behavior it is very likely that he is just some kid trying to look like a bad ass, even though he is a complete noob who doesn't know anything about "hacking" (or what ever you call it).

Now, if he did "hack" you, then it is already too late, as he probably captured all your passwords and placed all kinds of backdoors to get access whenever he wants to. He would have sent fraudulent emails from your account to all your contacts asking them to transfer a little amount of cash to help "you" out in an "emergency". He might be even watching you right now through your webcam.

 ;)

Have a nice day!

P.S. Oh, and I see this is your first post so welcome to EZ. Room 32B is upstairs to the left (I have learned the hard way). Dr. m0rph will make this issue the last thing you worry about.

Edit: if you are still paranoid, then the quick and easy way is to just reinstall the router firmware and your operating systems to get rid of all the malware, backdoors and other junk that might have gotten into there.

Thanks  :)

From what I understand, he's just a script kiddie; though you can never be too careful.

Yes, I'm aware that he would have already; but I want to go through the motions, just to make sure I know what to do if this ever happens again. Wow, I'm finding a bandaid to put over my webcam (though a netstat -a, pulled up with me being connected to no external IP addresses, so hoorah!)

Uhm. What is "EZ. Room 32B" in plain English? lol

I'm going to reinstall my firmware, as soon as I can; I was hoping that there was some log that would show if he had connected to it.

Thanks for your help! :)

Hmm.

I checked my event log, and even 24 minutes ago, and I believe that he's been actively trying to get through my modem's firewall.

The IP addresses used are from Amazon's VPN network, both in Brisbane, Australia and Seattle, USA.

I'm not totally sure that this is him, but I've wiped my computer, and reset my IP a few times. Does this mean that he has something on my modem to relay the ip address back to him?

EDIT: Even now, my firewall is blacklisting it. I know my firewall should keep him at bay, but I'm worried about how he found my new ip.

Resetting your IP only resets your comp's IP on the internal network. Go do a whatismyip and you'll see what I mean. I'm not sure that it's possible to reset your external IP. If you can, you'd have to hit the reset button on your router and hold it for at least 10 secs then reconfigure your whole network. And that might not work, some ISP's will assign you an IP.

Just make sure your firewall is running, and record these events. You can always turn them over to the ISP and have them handle the legal matter. Try to make sure your getting tons of traffic from the same IP though, and its best if its not a proxies IP. Because if it is then they can't/won't do anything. If nothing else by giving them the IP they may blacklist him before it even gets to your firewall

*edit:
you said he's using a VPN which i somehow missed lol. so the last part won't help much :/

In my case, the ISP has decided to dynamically assign ip addresses. So I have the ability to change my external IP.

My firewall seems to be doing the trick, but it's unnerving how he got my new IP.

LOL I was about to reply, but I saw your edit. Thanks for re-reading it :P

Wireshark is a  network protocol analyzer, lets you capture and browse the traffic on your network. Its also freeware last i heard. Netstat -a displays network statistics with 2 specific demands (See how many bytes flow through the connection and See what existing connections/sockets are open. Some would say netstat is insufficent so, you already gave netstat a go. Give wireshark a try.

Like many said, that idiot was just trolling. You can't really establish a connection TO THE MODEM remotely from a computer. It's not how the modem works...
Just ignore that fucker and it's gonna be fine. He can scan all he wants, scanning doesn't do anything...

In plain English? It's room 32B on the third floor. Every new member has to pay a mandatory visit to this room.

This made me cry quite a bit.

"all kinds of backdoors"

Personally, disabling HTML access to your router will prevent a major weakness in it. (that goes for everyone)
