No. You can only see it's last location before it was dead. And even for that you had to have specific tools on the device before it went off line or dead.
By dead I assume you are saying "Equivalent to No-battery-inside".

Well, sort of, the battery is inside it, it just has no more...juice? Idk if that is the greatest thing to call it. I just got this phone for scoring over 2000 on the SAT's, any, and I mean ANY ways of tracing, tracking, or recovery would be ridiculously appreciated!!!!!!

You could track it if it is used again... In the same country if the police is cooperative..

else forget it mate. There is no way whatsoever. Had you done something to track it beforehand... Like some chip etc.. Then maybe, but you did not and that is why you're here.

Anyhow, the network providers will know if your phone is used on their network.. Along with the exact location. Provided that the new user did not somehow change the imei.

Simply not worth the effort... Get another is all I can say.

I guess there is a way to triangulate the phone's location. The phone when discharged always has SOME reserve power even though it doesn't turn on. That reserve power keeps the internal clock and settings running, much like the battery in your motherboard.
So you should be able to track it with the IMEI if your police is cooperative enough, and I think it would cost to do so.
Though p_2001 is right about that phone - it's just not worth this kind of effort, get another instead.

A friend had his brand new n8 stolen back when it was just out..

The police did track it.. But the policeman said.. what a beautiful phone, i also like a Nokia phone, I wish I had that... But both of us aren't getting what we like.
my friend then bought the phone and "gifted" it to him and in turn that guy had the phone returned.

All it takes is a phone call from the police to have the imei blacklisted on all networks. But they rarely do that.

You can only track the phone if it is operated.

@kulver the phone does have a way to maintain clock, but the network is not connected. The phone is tracked only if it is switched on to a network.

Just so that you know, if that phone will ever be used again, it will give out its location right away. It is not expensive nor difficult to track a stolen phone if it is used as a phone quickly after it has been stolen. Phone network providers can see every phones location after 1 button click. The whole triangulation process has been integrated into the system. Also, it is bullshit that you have to have the guy speaking on the phone for some time to get his position. Thats how movies show it, a guy with a timer who always hangs up after 45 seconds or something not to get traced. Guess what? It takes about 1ms to trace a phone if the guy is actually talking with someone. It also takes 1 sms message. If the phone is on for a few mins, you don't even have to call or send messages. The phone will keep checking the signal and connecting with best signal strength towers. Whole country is divided into many tiny "cells" and as you move around to different cell zones the phone reconnects to different towers. When this happens, the provider can see your location instantly. And this process happens pretty often. So this means that if the police will try to trace it, and if they will do it while the thief has the phone on, they will get him. I have personally seen many cases where stolen phones are traced and returned to the owners very quickly (like in a day after being reported stolen). The only problem arises is if the guys export the phones to other country for sale, or if they keep it off for a month or two (police has too much shit to do already, they won't bother to keep looking for a phone for longer then a month or something like that), or if your phone was never stolen but rather you lost it.

No.. imei is not easily changed, also illegal to do so....but it is doable.

A thief will just sell it outside type country.
An amateur will sell it nearby.
If it is found by someone then they will either give it to your police or keep it. If they keep it then it is easily traceable.
If surrendered to the police... Either said person will keep it or they might enter it to the list found registry database.

YOU MUST have a friend in police.. A connection or something..
Else they will not bother.
Do not say that the phone was lost.... Say something like it was stolen FROM your pocket.. Even if this did not happen.. No police will bother looking for list phones.
You might have to bribe in the end.. if it is found you might have pay something around a quarter of the new one.. That is if you're lucky... Don't hope to much.. Chances are that you're phone has been shipped to somewhere in Asia.
because once your file a report it is mandatory for police to blacklist your phone imei on all networks.

Also, it will make sure that you're not blamed if you're phone was used for something malicious.

Anyhow... Reporting is a must...

Yeah, I'm almost positive it was taken by some stoner retard who sold it to one of his buddies. I just need to know where the fucking thing is before I lose my mind!

@p_2001

Not always do you have to bribe cops. It depends largely where you live, and what specific department you contact and what specific people do you get to talk to.
I saw how three friends of mine got their phones back without any bribe.

@namespace 7

Welcome to India buddy :).

See..here we are true capitalists...want something done? Pay for it.. Either a favour or money...

See, recently had my passport renewed, paid the Cop 500 rupees.. The one who comes for inspection during police enquiry for each application.
If i didn't then somehow my application will fail.
The same goes for inspections that happen if i get a job.

I don't mind it.. I would pay everytime...everyone does.

One day him or someone from his "clan" will come... The medical Bill made from one person will be enough for us to pay them several times over. That will be from genuine investigations... Sadly my father does not write investigations when not needed. A doc here gets 40% of each investigation done.

One MRI written means bribe for 5 times lol.

Although i won't mind living wherever you do... Seems Nice.

It's too big to lose, you'd spot it a mile away.  ;D

Just kidding, hehe.
Yeah just go to the police, they can track the phone even if it's switched off.
If it's still under warranty, you could get a replacement too and block the old phone. :)

I hope so! And, I can't blame someone for wanting to steal it, the phone kicks ass! So let's say the cops do trace it, will it be an address, a general area? And depending on the answer to the last question how should I get it back? Just march up to the person and ask nicely, or something like knife-point(JUST KIDDING)?
