The Best File Compression Software

Hi Guys, what kind of file compression do you use? And what do you think is the Best?


I've heard of KGB archive which can compress 1GB to 10MB, but it has to wait for a very long time, and the same amount of time is needed to decompress.


Any IDEAS on what software to use, which have high compression ratio.

7-Zip is definitely the best compression. Zip files are the most common

I use 7zip mostly. WinRAR is also nice.
Compression ratio solely depends on the data that you compress. One algorithm is better than the other in some ways but not a lot. You can compress data like text files from 10GB into 10KB - it's very much possible. That's how those ZIP bombs were made (terabytes of junk compressed into kilobytes lol).
If you want to compress 10GB of movies/music into 10KB - that is not possible.

Just reading the first paragraph of that wiki explained to me why music's sound quality is reduced after being compressed and then uncompressed

I also use 7-zip, and winrar usually. But I am looking for a solution to compress all my movie files into a very small file size, cuz my hard-disk is gonna be filled. Ever heard of KGB?

It is not possible to compress movies into "very small size". You can, at most, given the best conditions compress few megabytes but not reduce 700mb movie into 700kb file... if that was possible, people would not buy external hard-drives

Yep... Try to understand how compression works..
A text file is compressed.. As in 100 mb to kb...

Movies are not.. Not realistically and without loss.

LOL yeah, I'm going to buy WinZip right now because it's so much better than the other 500 compression programs
I'm super l33t hax0r anyways so all I use are tarballs and tty1  jk, I don't compress things often anyways, I don't own any ripped movies or music etc...

Hey buddy

Before choosing "the best" compressor, there are things that you might want to consider.

Imagine a Triangle, and there are 3 aspects, Compression Ratio, Compression Speed, and Decompression Speed are representing each point of the triangle.

Well converting a 1gb file into a 1mb file is Possible, but again, back to the triangle. By moving near the Compression Ration point, you are moving far away from the other 2 aspects of compression.


There's no perfect compressor, it all depends on your taste, but here are some recommendations.

KGB Archiver, Nanozip 0.09, FreeArc, WinUha/UHARC, FrontPAQ/PAQ, and WinRK.
